Justin, my I3s are down to number 5 (started at 8, I think). It has 60k+ miles on it!

Nice! You're getting great mileage out of them. As much as I like my new tires, I will put the i3s back on once these wear down. No use in wasting good money/tires. :)

i'll be happy to send it to you once i know she won't need it for a replacement for one of the front. we'll either be trading in the car on a 10 or 11 or she'll need new front tires. send me a reminder, definately next spring at the latest. i wonder if cross country shipping is more/less environmentally friendly than recycling?

Using it to the end of its life and then recycling it is the best, IMHO. Shipping 3,000 miles is worth 60k miles of use.

Just a quick update. The tires are wearing well but I would consider them a low mileage tire. I don't have accurate mileage numbers because I swap between them and my 17s a lot. I would put them in the same category as the EP100 as far as longevity is concerned. In all they are great tires and even served me well during winter storms which they are not designed for.

Does this mean that you believe that rolling resistance is high (and resultant mpg is bad) or that the tire tread life will be lower than expected, or ??

Sorry, Patrick I should have been more clear.

I feel that the rolling resistance is fantastic and mpg is great. I do not perceive these to be a long lasting tire. They are rated with a UTQG of 460 which isn't terrible but compared to the Michelin Hydroedge they may not last as long. I would guess they are a 45,000 to 55,000 mile tire. I wish they were cheaper so I could recommend them more often but they are up with the Energy Saver in pricing. The Ecopia EP100 is a better deal unless you want the most eco friendly tire available.

    Just another quick update.

I swapped out my 17s again and put these tires back on and I am continually amazed at how easy these tires roll. I ended my commute (98% highway) with 60.6mpg whereas the best I could oull off with my 17s was 50.2 mpg. There is one stretch of road where rural meets the city. At a speed of 50mph I lifted off the throttle and entered glide mode approx 1 mile from the stoplight. I glided the whole way and had, to use the brakes to stop. I was quite amazed.

I wish these tires were less expensive so more people could buy them. They are about as ecofriendly as you can get with a tire. 80% less petroleum and built in a zero emissions plant!

Nah. I'm saving the tread for summertime blingin'. :)

In the winter the car just stays dirty so I don't care if it looks ugly with the 15s on and frankly the winter mpg hit is softened with the 15s. I think I would be stuck in the low to mid 40mpg range with the 17s and with the 15s I'll be in the 50-55mpg range. Excluding major rain events.

F8L, Thanks for the great info & lessons. I plan to seriously look into the Yokohama dB Super E-Spec, w/ vitamin-C, if for nothing else: They should make for the "healthiest ride of all." Hav a good one, DJ

Dj. These tires are nice but they have become quite expensive for what they provide. I would suggest looking at the Energy Saver A/S instead. They are much cheaper (with the $70 rebate) and provide better fuel economy. :)

Good morning F*L, I truly appreciate this "tire Tip" even this early in the am. I'll google after a "nap" & see who in my area (zip 33023) supplys them. Have a good Wed. DJ

I started a new job this past may, that requires an 80 mile commute, each way, daily. I seem to be going through my front tires quickly now - I'll have to check what they are. I am considering these Yokohama tires as a replacement on my 2006 Prius.

Obviously I need a high mileage tire that can give me at least 45 mpg. My commute is virtually flat with about 15 miles expressway doing 75, and the rest country roads in the Central Valley, doing between 65 and 68.

    Recommendations?

I wouldn't bother with this tire because of its high price tag.

I would suggest looking into the Michelin Defender. It will give you a bit less mpg but it has a 90,000 mile tread wear warranty.

For Max mpg the Energy Saver A/S (T) is an excellent choice for the best mpg but it has a 65,000 mile tread wear warranty. They can also be difficult to find something which makes emergency replacement kind of a hassle. TireRack.com has them in stock. I suggest waiting until one of the stores offers the $70 rebate which happens every month or so. Alternatively I think Toyota has their buy 3 get 1 for $1 deal right now.
