injen cold air intake.. Good or Bad? anyone know?

    4 yrs ago i did a NeedsWings Cat. Delete but kept the factory muffler on. Wife and i have had so much fun with it sense we bought it in 05.

    Amazing car. I'm a SRT guy at Heart. We stole the SRT-6 when the economy tanked out and sold it a few years later for 500$ less then what we paid. I've known Rob from back in the SRT-4 days.

    It wouldn't be hard for a magazine that got serious about it to dyno a Prius engine. When Hot Rod, Circle Track and a few other serious performance magazines get serious about testing and developing performance in an engine they take it out of the car and put it on an engine dyno. I have run many engines on an engine dyno, it's just a matter of more labor to get more accurate results. Problem is, there isn't enough interest in Prius engines to get a magazine to do that.

    Also, if you develop much more power, then there is serious doubt about the electronics being able to handle the extra torque and power required of the electric motors to balance loads in the transmission.

    Engine Dyno's are for good old carbureted motors... Hooking any type of a EFI engine to a engine Dyno is a pure nightmare. My head hurts just thinking about what would be required for a prius motor.

    I have personally done well over a few thousand pulls on chassis Dyno's. It's pretty much humanly impossible to factor out that last 2-3% variance pull to pull. Problem is all these HP increase claims are so small they can easily be masked in that impossible to factor out variance.

    A chassis Dyno is problematical for a Prius as there is no way to get a fixed gear ratio or constant RPM. the dyno charts I have seen are reduced to HP versus Tire speed.

    You can't have HP without RPM. It's a mathematical equation. Dyno's actually measure Tq and read RPM then calculate HP.

    HP = (Tq x RPM) /5252

    they just go HP & Tq vs speed (drum speed) to make the graph "look" normal. You do the same thing with high HP Automatic cars that have loose converters. In that case those cars will "hang" at a set RPM for many MPH until the converter locks up. Just like our cars hang at a set RPM because of the CVT.

    I guess what I'm saying is the graph would be almost one demensional for 90% of the pull if you showed it as RPM and not speed.

    Dyno's don't care about gear ratio. Dynojets calculate gear ratio by changes in RPM vs. Drum speed. You can actually bring up Gear ratio on Dyno Jets. If you did on a prius it would just track MPH for the most part. Using Gear Ratio on a Dyno is a great way to see if a clutch is slipping or if you are powering through the clutch. Or on a auto at what point it's locking up.

    Dyno Tidbit... Because of that equation that is why HP and Tq ALWAYS cross or are the same at 5,252 RPM's.

    Looks good ??? It is in the engine compartment !!!!:D

    Mine is only opened on average 1x in every 10k for maybe 1 hour AT THE DEALERSHIP ... and I do note even see that.... THE ONLY time I open it if the washer fluid is out ...:)

    But your wheels do look good from any angle any day !!!

    Only in the Imperial or US Customary Units world. If you are using metric units they don't.

    it wouldnt be hp then.... but now you got me wondering... ive never looked up like a newton meter equivilant equation. i know i have seen a conversion for monkey power lol

    Nice ride. I still have my C32 AMG. Same motor as the SRT-6. They are beasts.

    Bulletproof motors. I know people that have hundreds of runs down the 1320 spraying a 150 shot.

    The next mod that i'll be doing is putting a Air Scoop in the hood over the CAI so it will get fresh air.

    I spent years messing with European performance cars to squeeze more power out of them, especially helpful when you are on a road course racing track. Cold air intake have always been one of those things that we mess with. The best mod I've ever seen measured with a difference around 10 degrees, which roughly translate to 1% horse power increase. In a 300 hp motor that's 3 hp. Keeping in mind that in a high output motor in order to increase 1 HP you generally need to spend about $1000. So in term of money it's not a bad investment for a cold air intake. But given the purpose of the Prius it is not worth the money and increase if you asked me. 1% increase in a 97 HP motor is? 1 hp....

    The horsepower and torque commonly used in Europe are based on metric units. I don't believe the metric horsepower an official part of SI but it is in metric units.

    The units of US horsepower are the same as the Imperial horsepower.

    As opposed the the usual "Wow factor" I've gotten when I let people look under the hood of the PIP- "Wow! I'd hate to have to work on that" or "Wow!.. where's the engine?" :)

    You are actually sucking in more under hood hot air now, may sound faster but you are probably producing less power. (10 degree = 1% power) Also the oil film used on the filter may eventually cause the hot wire air flow meter to get bad readings and causing incorrect fuel mixtures. Of all the cold air intakes and K&N filters I have tried on cars that makes 400+ horse power in the past at the end of the day I went back to the factory air filters.
