Again, a brand new fob will program fine. A prior used remoe won't work without special tools. A previously programmed remote has info written into whatever chip is inside the remote. The only to overwrite this stored info is to clear all the memory of the car's functions, and program the newly acquired used remote first. If I had a need or desire to purchase a 4th remote, I would be happy to make a video showing what my tool does... Honestly, it's pretty boring.

I spent an hour on the phone with tech support for the one tool that I own. Granted, they're not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I also went back to page 1 of this thread, and about the 1st 5 posts describes it all. A new remote will go in fine. A used remote needs to be introduced to the vehicle via clearing memory.

This was a PDF, but I just copied the text. This is the company who makes one of my tools to program these keys, it is unaltered.

Programming procedure for (1) one prox equipped with smart access.

Maximum number of fobs the vehicle can store is (4) four.

Pro only; Software needs to be V9.25 or higher.

    M Dongle (Orange) Part # ADC-191

    Software required; ADS-125 Toyota & ADS-150 Toyota 2007.

SMC or Web security is required
The base model Prius has a black logo on the back of the fob & doesn't come equipped with

    smart access.
OEM Fob Part # for non-smart access is 89070-47180.
The fob with the chrome logo on the back is for the Prius equipped with smart access.

Also, you can tell by looking at the driver's side door handle. If it's equipped with smart access it

will have a black rubber push button on the handle.
OEM Fob Part # for smart access is 89994-47061
    ~Note-

2004-2009 Prius models that come equipped with smart access have a lockout button on the

bottom of the dash, just below the steering column. Be sure the button marked "key" is not

depressed and it is in the out position.

A word about programming previously “used” prox:

    3
Frequently you may be asked to program a prox that has been bought off the internet or

elsewhere. Our testing has shown that as long as the prox is the correct one and in good

condition, working order (good battery installed etc.) It will program in just fine.

HOWEVER a used prox will not program in using the ADD PROX function unless a

RESET IMMOBILIZER and RESET ECU function has first been performed on the car.
THIS PROGRAMING PROCEDURE IS FOR ONE PROX:
Start by placing an UN-programmed prox in the programming slot, now the anti-theft light (a

red key symbol) in the dash should be flashing.

    Hook up the Pro (
using the M dongle & beta V9.25 or higher) go to:
    Toyota>USA>Immobilizer>Type 2>Special functions>quick reset immobilizer
    .
This function Resets the immobilizer in an instant and places the vehicles immobilizer in the

    learning mode.

The screen will say "please wait" or "trying to communicate" but if you look at the dash you

should see a solid anti-theft light, meaning the cars immobilizer is in the learning mode.

Take the prox out of the slot, put it back in, if you only want to program 1 prox then next press

the start button 15 times watching the solid anti-theft light until it goes out. This will close the

    learning mode.
    NOTE:

If you want to do more than one prox insert a 2

nd un-programmed prox while the immobilizer is
still in the learning mode and it will program and close the learning cycle and the light should go

    out.
Once the light goes out completely turn the ignition off, take the prox out and turn the Pro off.

Now for this next procedure we need to trick the car into thinking there is a prox in slot so we

can turn on the vehicle without the prox actually being in the slot.

Here's how it's done; Put the prox all the way in the slot, then step on the brake, pull the prox out

just a tiny bit (this is done using very little force) until you hear a click, then press the start

    button.

Now that the car is ON (you should see the dash light up) and you can remove the prox out of the

    slot.
~Note-because we stepped on the brake the vehicle is recharging itself so you don't have to

worry about having low power in the battery or using jumper cables because the car will charge

    itself.
    4

Next step; turn the Pro back on (
Remember, using dongle M only) go to:
Toyota>USA>Prox>Type 5> You will get the SMC or WEB access screen
    .
Use your SMC calculator or if your PRO is not SMC equipped use WEB security. Input your

SMC or WEB security code, Press ENTER, the next screen should read: "Toyota Lexus remote

3", Press ENTER again, go to:
    special functions> reset ECU >
~Note- be sure the driver's door remains open during the entire procedure of resetting the ECU &

the screen should warn you of this, Press ENTER.
It's very important that the next screen reads:
"reset Immobilizer" - time required 16
    minutes
    ,
Sometimes there's a glitch that can occur were the screen will read

    "procedure complete"
    without stating

"time required 16 minutes", this is incorrect.
The work around is to try again; Press ENTER>reset ECU>ENTER>next should be the warning

screen about drivers door being open> Press ENTER.

    Now the screen should show
    "time required 16 minutes".
NOTE-There is no countdown timer on the screen so please keep track of the 16 minutes using

another device eg. Stop watch or clock.

At the end of the 16 minutes the screen should read
    "procedure complete".
    Press ENTER>
program remotes>ignition on (which it already is) … Press ENTER.
    The next screen should read
"keys programmed 0", which tells us that the reset worked.
Press ENTER. Next the screen will prompt you Press the lock & unlock buttons for 1 sec., then

press lock until you hear a beep from the car.

When you hear that beep… press ENTER (for 1 Prox).

If you want to add another remote, as soon as your done with the first one you put it away, bring

in the next remote, repeat the same procedure until you hear the beep.

When you're done with all your remotes… Press ENTER.

The next screen will tell you how many remotes are programmed.

    5

Press ENTER and you will get a procedure complete screen.
You can now shut off the vehicle and test your remotes.
Important Note- there is a button on the bottom part of the dash marked
    key(to the
    right of it it says
set) be sure that button marked KEYis out (and not depressed)
or it will cancel the smart access part of the remote resulting in the prox having to be

inserted into the slot in order for the vehicle to run.

Step 1- It's very important to make sure all the doors are closed except the drivers door, that remains open.

Step 2- insert the prox in and out of the slot twice.

Step 3- close drivers door twice, then leave it open.

Step 4- insert the prox in slot once and pull it out.

Step 5- close the drivers door twice, then leave it open.

Step 6- insert the prox in the slot & leave it in.

Step 7- close the drivers door once.

Step 8- turn the ignition on once, then turn it off.

Step 9- take the Prox out of the slot and the door locks should cycle.

Step 10- Next press the lock & unlock buttons together on the prox for 1 second. Then press the lock button for 3

    seconds.

    Step 11- locks should cycle.

Step 12-To exit the learning mode open the door & close it.

    Now open it again.

You are done! Now test your prox key functions to be sure they work.

    Want to post a report.
I used the method described in another thread (sorry for the long copy and paste, but I like having everything in one place):

    "kpsounis said:
All, this is to confirm that a BRAND NEW FOB with a silver logo will get FULL functionality (INCLUDING the SMART KEY functionality) if one follows the well known steps outlines in numerous posts in this thread. Since there is one thing that is not clear in these numerous posts which is probably specific to the the FOBs with a silver logo and the smart key functionality, I will repeat the steps here:

Start/stop engine (NO CHANGES over previous posts)
    -------------------
    1. Insert old fob into slot and remove it 4 times in a row, and insert it a fifth time but leave it in there!
    2. Open and close driver door 6 times.
    3. Remove old fob from slot. Car is in fob programming mode at this point. Red anti-theft light remains on.
    4. Insert new fob and leave in the slot for a full minute. Watch the blinking red anti-theft light on the dashboard. When it stops flashing and goes dark, your new fob is all set.
    5. Remove the new fob and you're done.

Lock/unlock doors remotely + SMART KEY functionality
    --------------------
    1. Open the driver door with no fob in slot and the driver door unlocked and opened. Other doors can be locked or unlocked, it doesn't matter.
    2. Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice within 5 seconds.
    3. Close and open driver door twice.
    4. Insert and remove old fob once.
    5. Close and open driver door twice again.
    6. Insert old fob in slot and close door.
    7. Without pressing the brake, press power button, wait a second, press it again, wait a second, press it a third time to turn car back off.
    8. Remove old fob from slot. You'll be in "add mode" at this point. Car should lock and unlock doors to verify it is in add mode. (the precise number of times the car locks/unlocks the door is model specific - but it should do it at least once)
    9. ***the next step is the critical one***
9(i) Older posts instruct people to do this with the new fob only for a varying number of seconds, e.g. 1,2, or 3. This probably works with the black logo FOB but not with the silver logo FOB.
9(ii) The most recent post in this thread reads: Press both buttons on old/new fob simultaneously for 4 flashes of the red LED on the fob. There are two changes over older posts here.
9(iii) NOW, For the silver logo FOBs, it turns out the precise time is not the issue, that is, 1,2, or 3 seconds, or till you get 4 flashes, doesn't matter. The issue is to do this for BOTH the old and the new FOB. One should simultaneously hold down the lock and unlock buttons of a FOB but not simultaneously do it for both FOBs holding down all 4 buttons at the same time. I did this only once so I am not 100% certain about the sequence, but this is what I think worked for me:
    - first press down both buttons of the NEW FOB simultaneously, car responds with locking/unlocking TWICE (not sure this step is even needed as car responding with locking/unlocking TWICE implies this is not a programmed FOB yet for this car)
    - then, say 1 second after the car stops locking/unlocking due to step above, press down both buttons of the OLD FOB simultaneously,
    - then, say after 1 second, press the LOCK button of the NEW FOB. Now, IF SUCCESSFUL car responds with locking/unlocking ONCE implying this new fob is now programmed/paired with this car.
(iv) As already mentioned in previous posts, you have 40 seconds to play around with the steps in (iii) above. I had to play around a bit since it was not clear to me if one should first use the NEW FOB or the OLD FOB in the sequence of simultaneously pressing both keys. What is clear is that one needs to use BOTH FOBs
    10. To end this programming, open a door or put the fob in the slot.
    11. Even though I don't think it matters, I actually tried the smart key features after I drove the car for a minute while having the new fob in the slot. The smart key functionality worked fine.

Bottom-line: with a NEW key at hand there is NO NEED to pay ANYBODY to program the FOB as one can get FULL functionality by performing the steps above at home.

    PS I have a 2006 SKS prius.
    And this is my result:
    Well only partial success.
I have every reason to believe this is a new unprogrammed FOB.
Bought it in eBay for around $150.
Came in a Toyota box and bubble pack.
    Has the right number- 8994-47061.
    Has a blank mechanical key
    Doesn't look used.
Could it be used?- I hope not
Anyway with all that as background, I could not get the
"Lock/unlock doors remotely + SMART KEY functionality"
The first sign of "glitch" was at step 8:
"8. Remove old fob from slot. You'll be in "add mode" at this point. Car should lock and unlock doors to verify it is in add mode"
I never got the lock and unlock doors.
I believe I did get the unlock or some kind of lock action after step 7 where I press the Power button a 3rd time, but I think that's normal.
I'll have to double check whether that's the case.
I did try this scenario 3 or 4 times but never got past it.
Then I went back to the:
"Start/stop engine (NO CHANGES over previous posts)" protocol
and I was able to to at least get the new FOB to do that.
I am only somewhat relieved because I was a bit on edge only having one working SKS FOB.
    Now I have a 2nd "dumb" FOB.
I still don't have a 2nd mechanical key for that FOB because my local hardware store was not able to duplicate one a few days ago.
    So I'm open to suggestions.
Is there something I did not pay enough attention to?
    Or try something different?
    Thanks

Hey I'm sorry for bringing another thread into this thread in the post just above (by the way is it possible to simply delete one of my posts) but I got confused and didn't realize that all this info is contained in this thread.
After re-reading this thread I will try again because I re-confirmed that there are quite a few who have done this...and "I'm smart enough...good enough...people like me and I deserve a 2nd Smart FOB"!!

for those of you who are following my saga I hope you learn something.
For those who are sick of it or of me monopolizing so much space I apologize.
Just tried to program new FOB again.
I got a little further this time.
It failed at the very last step:
"then, say after 1 second, press the LOCK button of the NEW FOB. Now, IF SUCCESSFUL car responds with locking/unlocking ONCE implying this new fob is now programmed/paired with this car.
Unfortunately there was no locking/unlocking at this point.
The only complication I can think of at this point is that my 12V battery is possibly/probably running low.
It is reading just over 10V when sitting in the garage for 2 days.
Along those lines there is another phenomenon I wonder if anyone has a clue.
After I tried the chicken dance several times...and probably ran down my already troubled battery...I get a constant beeping when I open the door.
Is this an indication that the battery is low?
I am sufficiently frustrated and concerned that as many times as I have tried to get into Maintenance Mode and tried the chicken dance I am running battery and lights and whatever else to a low level.
I think I'll stop for now until I get full determination on the 12V battery

    1) You need reliable 12V power. 10V is toooo low. Do you have a charger? If so, hook up the charger for at least 3 hours b4 starting this again and leave it hooked up the entire time. The only recommendation I can give you is that when it tells you to press 2 buttons simultaneously, press the unlock button just a millisecond b4 the lock button. If you press the lock button first, it will not work.

    Try this and report back.

    will do.
waiting for local Prius specialist mechanic to call back so I can have a chat with him and see what he thinks about the battery and the OEM/Optima/Mobility Battery debate that is described in another thread.
Hopefully your clue about the sequence of button presses will be the magic key to the chicken dance

This is reposted as an attempt to make the instructions foolproof. If anyone sees any problems with this, please let us know so we can fix it. This should work and be easy to understand.

    5. Remove the new fob and you're done with the non SKS portion of programming ( if you don't have SKS, you are done).
Lock/unlock doors remotely + SMART KEY functionality
    --------------------
    1. Open the driver door and leave it open with no fob in slot (ensure the driver door is unlocked). Other doors can be locked or unlocked, it doesn't matter.
Complete step 2 within 5 seconds
    2. Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice.
Complete steps 3. and 4. within 40 seconds of completing step 2.
    3. Close and open driver door twice.
    4. Insert and remove old fob once.
    Complete steps 5., 6., 7. and 8. within 40 seconds of completing step 4.
Within 3 seconds, the car should lock and unlock doors to verify it is in add mode. (the precise number of times the car locks/unlocks the door is model specific - but it should do it at least once). If it does not cycle the locks, return to step 1. otherwise proceed to step 9.
Steps 9.a. and 9.b. should be started within 40 seconds of completing step 8.
9a: Press and hold the lock and unlock key on the OLD/MASTER fob. (a couple of seconds should pass and the locks will cycle once.
9b: Press both the Lock and Unlock key on the NEW fob at the same time. Hold for about 1.5 seconds.
9c: Wait about three seconds then press the lock key on the NEW fob. If successful the lock/unlock will cycle once indicating success.
9d. - If you need or want to program another "new" fob, repeat steps 9. a. 9.b. and 9.c. for the next new fob. If done programming fobs, proceed to step 10.
    10. To end this programming, close, then open the driver door or put the fob in the slot.
I'm hoping this is 100% correct with no errors or guesswork (foolproof). If it isn't, please let us know and I will update these instructions. I'm nearly 100% certain this is the correct procedure though.

PS: Practice these steps first (dry run).

sorry- I cannot report success using the new improved foolproof instructions.
I get stymied at 9b- the lock cycles at least twice.
I have tried repeating steps 9a and 9b again, paying careful attention to pressing the unlock button a millisecond ahead of the lock button, but no JOY.

I have repeated the whole sequence several times with no JOY.

I believe my NEW FOB is in fact a NEW FOB. As I said previously it came packaged in a Toyota bubble-wrap and looked new, uncut mechanical key etc.

I have been able to perform the first protocol on it- the Start/Stop engine.
But not the lock/unlock or SMART KEY functionality.

    SOB...sob...SOB...

    mosesk,

Humor me when I ask this question. Is the fob you are trying to program with the chicken dance have a silver or a black logo on the backside of it?

    SILVER...

a more humorous question would be:
"Does it have a Toyota logo on the backside..."??

This is just one of those frustrating things because several members have reported success.
And while I don't think I have Mensa-level IQ, nor the eye-hand coordination of Roger Federer, I think I can be trained to do a chicken dance...

Humor is much appreciated. With all that said the only thing I will say is that you just confirmed that you have the correct key fob for the Prius equipped with SKS.

FWIW, there have been many who tried the black logo key fobs in the past who had problems such as what you are having. Since I never took the time to determine the correct part # for the fob, I chose to ask the question the way I did.

There have been many before you do the chicken dance with success, or at least it appears so due to posts here on PC. I haven't done it myself yet, but might try it somewhere down the road if I ever need to replace the fob I use. Sorry I could not be of more help to you on this one. I do note that other's have said the last part can be tricky at times. It might be the sequence you are doing, or something like that. Since I have never attempted what you are doing, I can only go by what has been said and recorded here on PC in the past.

Hope you get it working though!

you know the silver lining is that i may very well want to stash this 2nd FOB in the car...and a mechanical key somewhere on the outside...should i ever lose/misplace my primary Smart FOB.
And in that case it would be better not to have the 2nd FOB be smart because it could/will interfere with the first.
    Yes-
I know there are ways around it- remove the battery from 2nd FOB, wrap it in tinfoil...but...

    Anyway nice PriusChatting with you

I had some time to find the post from Julia 2001. She claims to have successfully programmed a new key fob she bought. Take a look at this string and most importantly post #22.

I haven't seen her post recently, so I don't know if you could pm her or not.

    Anyway, here is the string.

Where did you buy your new chicken danceable KEY FOB, please? | Page 2 | PriusChat

Also, for the record it appears she was working with a 2007 Prius, two years younger than yours.

In the same string, oocutioo post #25 claims to have done the same thing (chicken dance) on a 2006 Prius.

EDIT: After doing more searching online, I did finally find someone who claims they were successful with a 2009 Prius.

Here is the link - reference post #19

IMPORTANT EXPERIENCE: KEY/FOB Programming Issues | PriusChat

Again I wish you the best of luck with the chicken dance. If you do get it to work, please let all of us know. I may end up having to get another fob in the future. Mine is getting pretty worn, plus the alarm key popped off last year so I am not sure how much longer it will last.

    I will.
I feel like I'm letting the whole PriusChat site down by not successfully completing the "Smart Chicken Dance".
I expect to be tar and feathered.

The chicken dance works with a never-programmed-before keyfob. Which leaves very few possibilities...
    • 1. The keyfob has been programmed previously
    • 2. It's not a silver logo keyfob
    • 3. The keyfob is defective
When a parts department gets a part returned and it appears ok, they may just repackage it and put it back on the shelf. So original packaging is a strong indication of a new part, but it's not a guarantee.

The silver logo panel is the exact same shape as a black logo panel. It's the circuit board inside the keyfob that determines function, not the logo panel on it. They can be switched.

I'm guessing that the keyfob is previously programmed, and that only a seed reset process will allow it to be reused. The only way to find out for certain is to try adding it with Techstream or a locksmith tool. If that fails, and a seed reset corrects the problem, then the keyfob is ok and it was previously programmed.

I had to try one more time with a clear head and even more resolve.
    But no JOY.
I have written a follow-up note to the eBay seller directing him to this site, this thread, and see if he can shed any light on why I can't get the desired result.
Hope it doesn't turn out to be operator error
