What requirement is that? It may be a defacto political requirement, but I don't think that there is anything in the constitution about that.

So, now that the tax credit is gone, I asked Longo Toyota to have my deposit back, and I got the reply "Are you sure? You are right here." So, from being #25 for six months without moving at all (in fact, they moved me briefly to #26), how did I transition to "right here" all of a sudden? Any advice? Is it worth trading in a Prius Prime for a new one without a tax credit?

Was there anything the 2022 gets that your 2021 doesn't have?

It depends on the trade-in. The KBB trade-in value is higher than the MSRP.

If you could still get at least an even trade between the current and new car, then it's worth the hassle.

How about mechanically? Were there any changes Toyota made on 22 PP that is different from 21 PP? I can't think of any.

It depends. Only one model year difference may not make much gains, especially on a low-milage car. For 21 PP and 22 PP, AFAIK, they are the same cars without any changes mechanically. Even if at even trade-in sales price wise may end up with higher cost on the new car with increased insurance cost, more tax to pay. And if the car to be traded-in has some mods like the tinted window that can not be transferred to a new car, then certainly it would be a loss situation. For me, even when the full $4502 tax credit was available for the 22 PP earlier this year, the 21 to 22 PP trade was no longer equitable when Toyota cut the cashback from $5500 to $1500 which was later slashed even further.

Those are things they has to consider, and the details weren't shared here. It doesn't seem like California has a car property tax; almost half the states don't. I wouldn't consider trading a car after just a year because of the general hassle with the event, but they are already on a waiting list to get one. If the deal will still be in their favor, the reasons to not continue through are of a the minor scale.

It's been almost two years since I bought my 2021 actually. My monthly payments would go down by about $150 if I traded in, even with today's higher interest rates. I would also get about $1,000 in sales-tax benefits through itemized deductions. California and Toyota rebates amount to about $1,000 as well. I would also get another two years of free maintenance, which is another $500. On top of that, factor in the depreciation of my current car, at about 15,000 miles. It may be a good deal in the long run. I need to consider it.

Maybe no excise tax on a car like my state, but CA sales tax would be a good enough reason not to go with even trade. At even trade, the buyer is already 7.25% (or more?) in red for the sales tax since they don't give a discount on the sold used car.

Yeah, after waiting so long, it almost makes people feel like the wait is worth it. But it generally isn't. I waited until this week to cancel my Soltera order. As soon as they announced the price of the car in April, I did not think it was a good buy. But since it was the first BEV by Subaru, thus there was a large demand, I kept my order to see at least until the car arrived and I test drive it. But, without the tax credit, it just makes no sense to go forward with the purchase.

Oh, no, I always refer to out-of-the-door cost. The out-of-the-door cost of a 2022 less the tax benefits and registration (~ 1,000 + 400) is almost the same as the trade-in value, both about $37,000. The sales tax is 10.25% in my city. Used cars are more expensive than new cars at the moment—hence the benefit of wait (or the premium of not having to wait).

I see the issue in our conversation. When I say even trade, I mean out the door with everything signed.

Isn't that the sunk cost fallacy?

Unless approaching the point of needing a new car, I'd pass on such waits.

So, I asked them where I was in line now, and I was told that I was still #25. LOL

I told them that I've been #25 for many months now, and they told me that the production was very low but they just got a new allocation and they will see who got what.

From what it seems, this line isn't going anywhere…

Actually, Toyota put out a communication this past week saying they are increasing production to 900000 units a month beginning 4th qtr. They also announced Sept production will go up to 850000 units....So, increased supply and decreased demand.

Good to know but still a small fraction of the pre-2020 production.

I live in San Diego and went to the Toyota website to build a Prius. I did it 5 times to different dealers. That was in March, and got one in April from the first dealer. No markup. They contacted me when one was available, but I had to rush for the deposit. It arrived a week later. Just worked out.

    Perfect experience and perfect color!

LA–OC is area is really bad in Prius and Prius Prime availability. San Diego is probably not that bad.
