In Virginia, believe regular no-plug hybrid still wins. We tax the bejesus out of cars, annually.
So although my area is relatively affluent, buying expensive car, like Tom's Lexus PHEV hybrid, is like torture.
We do have some Model 3's these days. IN any case, best car to buy is going to depend on incentives where you live.
Also that Lexus better be bought by June? (same as Toyota?)

 

I’m in a Sentra rental right now and it’s absolutely horrible. The Prime is leagues aboVe it as far as quality and driving experience. The only two things I like on the Nissan is the radio unit and the comfortable cloth seats. I’ve been trying not to throw up while driving with the god-awful CVT.

 

LOL, You might have a higher standard of preference than I when it comes to a ride and comfort. I had to drive a loaner Sentra recently while my PP was in a shop. My experience was a quite bit more pleasant than yours.

There is no argument that PP is a rank or two above Sentra for its build quality and ride comfort. But then again, you are comparing an MSRP $20K car to a $30-35K PP. But, if my budget is only $20K max, and if there is no cashback or tax credit on PP or any other cars in its class, then what would I do? The Sentra may not be the best car, but it sure would be a strong contender in that price range.

 

Yes, I agree it would be a contender if you bought new. At that point you are looking at a Civic, Corolla, or an Elantra. If it were me I might look for used Camrys or Accords (this is pre-pandemic lol). But it differs by scenario.

 

Yeah, I feel so lucky that I have had not one, not two, but three Prius Primes to try and never go over my budget. Since the financial incentives on the PP seem to be ending, I am in search of the next level of an Eco Car. But with a budget of $20K for my daily driver, the only option I now have is a base Nissan Leaf with 150 miles range.

I wanted to see, what the new crops of BEVs are going to be. I was seriously thinking about Mach-E... but I could not find one without a mark-up. All of a sudden, the price of my daily driver jumps from ~$20K to over $40K (this is after full tax credit and state incentive). Besides, I dreamed of owning a Mustang when young, but at my age, performance is not something that I need or want. That turned my head to Subaru Solterra coming soon to market. Without mark-up, it should be a bit cheaper than Mach-E, Kia EV6, or Ioniq 5. And it is more utilitarian, practical, and conventional which I really like. I will see if my reservation goes through.

 

I would expect any EV at this time to have a mark up. More so on models still getting the federal incentive. It's why my car plans have changed.

 

What was your plan and how is it changed now? Just curious.
