20mph? Passing motorists (and passing bicyclists) must have thought your car was having issues? I have to drive faster than that on the street where I live.
The ICE would probably fire up if the car had hit 35-40 mph, that's what I've come to expect from my PIP with a full charge in cold temps.

I've done trips through the burbs, climbing hills at 45 mph with nothing but electricity despite below freezing temps.

Whether or not you need climate-control is the key. With a radiant sun and dry conditions, sometimes you don't.

What I like is how quickly warm-up is achieved. We've seen improvement from generation to generation. The plug-in takes it the next step.

Priuskitty, if your commute is very short, do not charge it to full.

Charging to full (85%), the battery will be unable to absorb more than 13 hp regen power. Exceeding it runs into the chance of ICE triggering.

Keep the SOC lower and you won't have to worry about ICE kicking on and you can drive faster.

i have to take issue with this john. it may be true for you, but in case you have not been reading this thread in its entirety, some of us are having the ice come on for unknown reasons. perhaps movie is right theorizing that not all batteries are the same.

Not all conditions are the same. I may not even be able to recreate the situation myself that often. The point was that it's not impossible. In other words, we need to avoid focusing on absolutes. For that matter, the criteria is going to be complex. No more simple parameters.

Is the effort to ensure EV or to understand why the engine starts?

Prius is a plug-in hybrid. It will run the engine from time to time.

gotcha. agree completely, the ice comes on infrequently and the effort is to understand why.

just got back from a test drive. car sat in the garage for 24 hours with 4 miles ev left. garage was probably 30's overnite while 20 outside. charged the car and left immediately. 45 in the garage and 36 outside. took my commute route which is the only route on which the ice has ever started. charge was 12.6, got to my downhill dip at 12.1 going 30mph. about 2/3 of the way down (.2 miles) ice fired up. ran for about 2 miles and shut off. then came on for about 30 seconds, then off for a minute, then on for about 15 seconds then off for good after a total of 4 miles of driving. drove a total of 13.4 miles and had 1.3left on the ev icon. got 322 mpg. when i make the same commute tonight under similar conditions, the ice will probably not come on since it has run already today. we'll see.

I also find that on a full or near-full charge, my ICE kicks in when braking, especially in warmer weather. I had presumed this was the car using the ICE to blow off un-needed energy/charge ...

it has happened to people who live at the top of a hill. i do believe you're right, but it usually takes a pretty substantial down down down and lots of braking.

Let me add some more confusion.

A couple of weeks ago I posted in this thread that mine was starting by itself where it never had. I had my heater temp set to fan off. Someone suggested I start off with the temp set at LO, which I did, the ICE didn't start. I thought that was it. Well last week for two days, and again today, I forgetfully had the temp at fan off, and the ICE didn't start until I hit the EV/HV button at 60 mph. So that seems to throw out the heater temp related theory. Oh, and I don't ever get to regen since it's ever so slightly uphill on the portion of my route I'm talking about. Outside temps for the last few weeks has been 25 to 30.

exactly what mine does....right around 40mph even just barely trying to accelerate slowly, still fires, this is only after cold night, fresh charge and below 35 or so it seems.
