Maybe a temperature sensor not working properly? Are there more than one temp sensors to read the outside temperatures? The one that reads out in the cabin would be easy to monitor, since it displays to the driver - but is that the only one? Could the engine computers use another sensor(s) that could be corrupt, forcing the ICE to run?

This is a tough one......Would a hard reset be worth a try?

Disconnect the 12V service battery for ...say... 10 minutes.

If nothing else, it would put all the settings to default.

I wonder if there is a wide spread problem? Also I couldn't tell in his video if he was EV auto or EV only. Hopefully my experiments will shed some light. However as for now, I've gone over a week with out the ice in my prime firing up.. freeway or city or if floored or if in B, just hasn't happened to me. The ice only comes on when I run out of juice, or defrost, or EV auto and I floor it. But I park my prime in a garage, so maybe that just enough too help? Hard to say until the experiments. But I'm banking on I think there a heater or sensor problem

Calm my friends. The first Prime were sold in November and I've only had mine in hand about five weeks . . . probably twice as long as the author. But in this same period, the freezing line was mostly way North of us. I don't remember a single, 24 hour day this year when it stayed below freezing. Freezing nights, yes, but not a whole day and certainly no snow.

So we'll have to wait for folks in Northern climates and even the next winter to try and replicate what the author reports. But in the world of problems, a Prius engine comes on by itself . . . not high on my priority list.

Not seeing this behavior in Wisconsin. That said, garage kept, not super hilly, fairly mild winter.

    Very easy to tell !
EV-Mode is the Primes default driving mode and doesn't show up as a driving mode symbol as Charge-Mode,EV Auto or HV-Mode does.
The video is of bad quality but you can see a driving mode is displayed on the left display,so it is absolutely impossible he is using the EV-Mode !

So, what does this mean, from the owner's manual?

And, by the way, this is a frame-grab from the video. Sure looks like Ev mode to me.

I presume it's pointing out that the EV/HV button switches off between EV mode, which has the "EV mode" indicator, and hybrid mode, which has no indicator.

I agree, but civicdriver06 keeps making this claim:

I'm pointing out that I'm pretty certain that's wrong.

Yeah does indeed look like EV mode. I went and checked mine, EV mode has the box around the words and EV auto does not and it looks like a box is there. 1488395900243.jpg 1488395910147.jpg

    Ah, gotcha.

civicdriver06, maybe this video, especially at time 0:58, might help clarify the question?

One thing in this video that I find a little ... misleading, I suppose ... is that that they start in hybrid mode, and show the driver hitting the HV/EV button to go into EV mode. That's a little misleading in that it defaults to EV mode, assuming the battery is sufficiently charged.

Did my first experiment this morning. Left my prime outside and plugged in overnight on the 120v. Temp was 37.

When I got to the hill I floored the pedal and went from 25 too 59 pretty quick. I was able to snap a picture.

I completed my journey to work and the ice never came on o_O

Maybe tomorrow I'll skip the 240 charger and leave it sit outside over night unplugged and see what happens

That might be considered Prime abuse.
