How are you getting the amp reading from the battery?

  2. By using ScanGauge II codes, try these:

Codes for state of charge, then you can name it SOC or whatever you want:
    TXD: 0747227A76
    RXF: C462057A3676
    RXD: 3008
    MTH: 006400FF0000

I too experienced the ICE engaging when I had a mostly full battery.
In EV mode with a full battery, left the house and went generally downhill for a couple miles...Then on a relatively mild uphill section noticed that the ICE was running. I switched the display to show the energy pattern and sure enough, the ICE was running. Don't believe the defroster was on, just normal A/C Auto climate settings...Outside temperature was in the mid-40's.

I probably wouldn't have noticed without having seen this thread and I have no issues with this behavior.

so......@bwilson4web do you still think it's a bad defroster switch on all the cars reported ICE coming on here?

Right now, the switch hypothesis doesn't sound as likely. However, curious you and I were both were setting the cruise control concurrent with our recent events.

Sad to say, we're getting a warm-up in Dixie which means we're probably not going to meet the temperature requirement.

Great movie! Next time it's cold, how about this: start driving right away, but once you get out of the parking lot, on the side street before you turn onto 14 Mile Road, can you pull over and put it in Park, and sit there for five minutes? Then proceed as usual.

Also, does the ICE come on only when you are using cruise control?

Tried again this morning but no luck:
    • 41F - may be too warm
    • ~2-3 minutes setting up iPhone to record
We're headed to a couple of days of warming temperatures. I'll survey dash cams and see if there is one that might be readily mounted and start recording when the 12V comes on.

Try this one, it works with your smartphone with the PlayMemories App.

    HDR-AS50R/B Action Cam + Live-View Remote Bundle - Walmart.com

and it's small enough to fit on your dashboard

ICE did not come on this morning, two criteria's, one, no cruise control set and two, no climate on.

Someone was mentioning that the ICE was coming on when they were in B-mode with a fully charged battery going downhill. In my experience, if you are going down a hill in B-mode the ICE is more likely to come on then in normal D-mode. I tried using B-mode as some have suggested it's better at using regenerative breaking but did notice that the ICE would come on at times whereas under the same conditions in D-mode it did not...

What happened? Was it too warm? Do we have to wait a week or two until you can do more reliable experiments? I'm glad you're getting more EV miles in, anyway.

I was under the impression that B mode meant engine breaking so the ice would have to be on in that case. At least that is how it works in my Prius v.

This particular symptom requires multiple conditions to be met. Even then, there appears to be some randomness:
    • fully charged - possibly, the default for over night, cold soak
    • cold soaked 40F or cooler - yes
    • immediate drive - yes, pausing in READY for ~5 minutes appears to defeat it, possibly just sitting after entry
    • early speeds, ~1 mile, over 25 mph
    • cruise control - likely
    • heating, auto vs manual - likely but a default for cold weather
    • bad luck
The cold soak limits the frequency of running a test. Since I'm in Dixie, a climate challenge.

I'm in California, and so far I have been very lucky to never see a Prius engine break!! And don't talk to me about ice; we can't even get some bloody rain out here!!

although it has occurred at temperatures as high as 45-47 F, so I'd say below 50 F:cool:

I've got a dash cam expected to arrive, Dec 2. Once it is here, I'll mount and test it (some assembly is required.)

We're in a warm stretch but the forecast is for a chill down the middle of next week.
