i think it's a combo of parking outside, and your driving parameters.

    Thanks!
I was able to extract these metrics:
    ss.s MPG mi 1/100 gal
    1 0.0 0.0 0.0 0.000
    2 75.9 199.9 0.2 0.100
    3 75.9 114.2 0.2 0.175
    4 133.0 46.8 0.8 1.709
    5 295.0 34.0 1.9 5.588
    6 295.9 34.7 1.9 5.476
    7 303.0 34.7 2.0 5.764
    8 359.0 38.4 2.0 5.208

What surprised me is no evidence of the warm-up, initial gas consumption. During ordinary warm-up, the first ~45 seconds show a flat rate and then gas consumption follows the load. In this case, we only see the flat rate.

I tried again tonight but no luck. So after 3 mi, I manually ON-OFF the front defrost and recorded a more accurate video. I’ll post the metrics later.

I am thinking of a dash cam as they have a manual ‘save’. Also, it may be time to get a miniVci to see if the OP might be able to get a data dump showing the car going into “Front Defrost” mode. Finally, time to seek disassembly and/or repair instructions for switch bezel.

It is possible the switch is normally closed and the LED wired across the switch. So when the button is pressed, the LED lights but goes out when the switch closes again, the LED is off. The switch would be a two more activated and save a separate wire and control software to light the LED.

I have a Dell inspirion 10 mini laptop with windows XP on it with the Techstream software on it, it's been awhile since I have used it so I may be a little rusty:coffee: I have a MINI-VCI J2534 Standard OBDI Communication Interface

Back in post 662 you sat in the car in Park for 10 minutes before leaving. Can you try to replicate that? Maybe just 5 minutes?

You may need a more recent Techstream if it does not recognize the model.

I don’t follow the version vs model. When you connect, an early screen will hopefully let you know.

Regardless, see if you can find a STATE indicator that tracks “Front Defrost.”

Last nights manual, quick ON-OFF of "Front Defrost" ran exactly 3 minutes and 30 seconds. The heater was set to 77F.

It didn't work. The only Plug In versions available were 2012 to 2013 and when I selected 2013 the service alert came up on the 11.5 inch screen of the car, I selected "ok" but when the service parameters came up on the Techstream they were all yellow meaning unknown status.

It needs further testing, one result does not a trend make, but the 5 min. 'preconditioning' would be called a "work around." It doesn't address the root cause but at least it keeps the fuel consumption down.

I'll continue to try and replicate the symptom but I am limited by how long we'll have 40F weather in Dixie. In the meanwhile, see if a more recent version of Techstream might be floating in the pirate pool. <grins>

Caution, I had a pirate version of Techstream "phone home" and brick itself when I was trying to do some investigations using my home WiFi.

  19. I want to add my "ICE came on" story, since it was 18F degrees this morning. I preheated the car via Remote Climate on my iPhone and then went on my way in EV Mode. Then came a place where I was behind a slow driver who kept driving way too close to the edge of the lane. So, I figured, I might as well pass. So, in Normal Mode, I pressed the pedal 3/4th of the way to the floor. This was over 100 Amps from the battery. But instead of passing on electric, the EV Mode icon stayed on, the black "EV" on green car symbol turned to a green outline, and the engine turned on and cranked right away to 3220 RPM. You might be thinking, "Aww gosh that poor engine!1!!" Well the transition from an ice cold cabin to 3220 RPM was very smooth, no roughness, so I guess that's the zero-weight portion of the oil making it smooth.

Anyway, the engine stayed on until the coolant temperature reached 130F degrees. I figured that marked the completion temperature of the warm-up cycle. (For you Prius c owners, it's 104F degrees to finish the warm up.) And each time thereafter that there was a need for me to pull about 120 A from the battery, the engine came back on and stayed on for part of the time, similar to HV mode.
