ICE comes on anyway

I tried again this morning, 41F (5C), no luck. So I switched to "Front Defrost" and found:

• ON-engine runs-OFF - the green light comes on with ON and out with OFF.
• If the heater is off, cycling ON-OFF, sets the AUTO mode with green light.
• If heater is running, cycling ON-OFF, no change.
• Duration 2:45

Still working on iPhone video technique. But now I'm wondering if going from EV-to-HV-to-EV has the same duration?

I still think you have a faulty sensor somewhere. Mine has never done that even once. You were at low power, in moderate temperatures, at low speed. Your fan setting was high on the A/C. Maybe that's it?

 

I always have my climate on, but on auto/eco/s-flow, which usually results in modest fan settings.

ya, i kept looking for instrumentation, or maybe we were listening for engine sound.

 

Still think there's a sensor problem somewhere.

I've driven mine on about 700 trips without that happening even one time.

 

Not usually, but occasionally (like all last week while I was on vacation). About a third of those trips it was parked outside for at least 8 hours, sometimes in temperatures lower than 20 degrees F.

I've had the ICE start four times when I didn't expect it, all four in a pretty big regeneration, all four in B mode. I've never once had it start in Drive mode when I didn't expect it to (pushing front defrost button and exceeding 85mph are the times I have expected it to).

 

i doubt the rental car also had the same bad sensor.

 

think of all the stale gas concerns other prime drivers fret over.
