Actually I've been hard of hearing since birth so I use the visual engine monitor to visually see ICE kicked in

How do you summon up the "visual engine monitor", oh wise Sage and soothsayer" ! I, mere mortal, do not possess this knowledge which I hope you might impart upon this most unworthy Peasant!

Love the pic you posted. Shows EV MODE with square outline clear as day.
Wife's previous 2012 PiP would turn the ICE on when it was below 40F and I got over approximately 32MPH. I could not figure out why and it irritated me greatly. I tried to just drive it and enjoy the ICE waste heat in the cabin. It infuriates me that your Prime is turning the ICE on and I'm committed to following and contributing to this thread until we get satisfactory answers.

Keep us informed of your ongoing trials with the ICE. When unexpected ICE on occurs safely take a picture of multi-information display again and the center head unit or take note the AC/Heat settings and any front/rear defrost usage. We may end up needing more data from an OBD reader that can check tractions battery temperature and individual cell health.

One thing that helps is when you're driving in colder weather, whether it's in a 2012-2015 PIP or 2017 Prime, when you drive under 25 MPH for the first 2.0 miles, then proceed to accelerate up to 35-40 MPH after that first 2.0 miles ICE will not come on. I surprised that no one thought of viewing the Energy Monitor that's been available on every Prius that I have owned (2007, 2010, 2012, 2015 and now the 2017 Prime) That's how I know when ICE kicks in.

    Ok,
    • 2.0 miles / 25 MPH ~= 4.8 minutes, round it up to 5 minutes
    • 35-40 MPH < 41 MPH, the past critical speed for hybrid mode
We need to see if others can replicate this protocol, something difficult in Dixie because our winter is so short.
    1. Does leaving the car parked, heater off, and READY for 5 minutes accomplish the 2 miles @25 mph?
    2. Does leaving the car parked, heater on, and READY for 5 minutes accomplish the 2 miles @25 mph?
    3. Does preconditioning the car for 5 minutes accomplish the 2 miles @25 mph?
    Calm my friend:
Intermittent problems are the hardest to replicate and living in Dixie, 'cold soak' is not a trivial problem. There were three months of a "brake pause" problem with the Gen-3 that took a lot of effort to diagnose. About the time we figured out how to quantify and replicate the problem, Toyota came out with a brake software update that fixed (or greatly reduced) the frequency to unobservable.

I have used the remote climate to warm up the car, and I think ICE still came on. I will have to investigate heater off(and/or on) and READY for five minutes

More of a practice, I started at 6:40 AM, a few minutes after sun rise but still in the ridge shadow. The windshield was a layer of ice measuring 18F (-8C) (radiant cooling.) The sides and hood measure in the low 20sF (-5C). Inside, the temperatures were 28-34F (-2 to 1C).

I wasn't able to get the car into READY plugged in. I'll have to review how a Plus trim car can precondition. So I unplugged and left the car in 77F (25C), max fan, direction windshield and feet. The external air temperature sensor reported 37F (3C). Parked warm-up, 5 minutes, no engine. It looks like 5 minutes dropped SOC to 99%.

I then drove 0.3 miles under 25 mph to where I could get on a cross-town road. Maximum acceleration to speeds up to +60 mph, the car remained in square 'EV mode' and filled EV car icon. Total loop distance, 3.3 miles. I'll try again tomorrow without the driveway warm-up.
