100% agree. I think every salesman should be required to drive one 24-7 for a week before they are qualified to sell one. If an individual sales person refuses then they should refer you to one that is "certified" on the Prius.

I wish he had told me about the low clearance, and how easiy it is to trash your front bumper even on wheel stops in parking lots, let alone ice bumps.

 

This is not very pragmatic at all. Car dealers have incredible turnover of sales staff (since it is, for many folks, a very crappy job that pays nothing when you are new). Only a very few sales persons get a take-home car.

If you think there is "unethical" dealer mark-up on Prii, try implementing the above recommendation ... and then we will see $7500 - $10,000 marks-ups just to pay for 20 year-old salespersons to race around in Prii ...

 

My deliveries take at least an hour after everything else has been done.

Most clients are overwhelmed but appreciative of the time. When training the rest of the crew here I liken a curtailed vehicle delivery to 'throwing the fob for the Millenium Falcon' to the buyers and tell them 'Have a nice flight'.

All the points you noted are critical because they are way different from every other vehicle. Then there..
Walking through the Owner's Manual and pointing out..
..the battery air vent
..the hidden secret 'lockout key'
..the fact that you can't lock the fob in the Prius in most cases
..the fact that under normal conditions that touching the driver's door will only unlock that door; touching the 'family door' will unlock all 5 doors.
..the TPMS reset button
..explain the fuel tank bladder issue
..then go over all the warning lights including the 'Triangle of Death' symbol
..explain the very minimal service requirements, oil / filters, air filter, plugs at 120K mi, PSD coolant change at 100K mi
This is all still in the Owner's Manual before even setting foot in the vehicle.

Then it's time to visit the vehicle.
Tow points, tools, battery locations, jump points as you note.
If BT-equipped have the buyer help program at least one phone
The steering wheel controls with the night driving 'braille system'
The Energy flow screen and Consumption screen
The Audio screen, set at least one station
The Climate screen

Then there's the Navi, if equipped.
It's a one month at home seminar with a test after 30 days. If the buyer doesn't pass the test then the Navi is removed .
At a minimum the 'HOME' destination should be programmed.
I also use the voice commands to show how to add a destination while in flight.
"I'm Hungry" always brings a smile to the owner.
The 'Telephone Number as Destination' is another smile inducer.
Finding a Restaurant in the middle of the town where that buyer was born opens eyes.

That's about 1 hour's worth of delivery. The buyer is absolutely overwhelmed ... except for the retired B52/B2 pilot who bought one and absorbed every detail like a sponge. Since he'd been driving ( ) a $Billion dollar vehicle in his day job he was open to a file-dump presentation.

After seven months of ownership, I've never heard of the "family door." And yes, I have read the manual. Can you help me with this. Thanks.

 

I have not heard it called the Family Door, but the hatch and passenger door handles will unlock all 5 doors where the driver's door only unlocks that door.

It's trivial to reprogram so the driver's handle unlocks all the doors - see the owner's manual.

That's my own name for the front passenger door since when that door handle is touched then the whole family can pile in. Ditto the hatch.

'Triangle of Death' is also my name ( got one tonight ...again ) for the Master Warning light. It's more colorful and to the point and it makes the delivery more alive.

 

You can change that setting to have the drivers door unlock all or have only the door / hatch you touch unlock that door only.

(Close all doors and stand near your Prius and press and hold both the panic and unlock button on your keyFob for about 5 seconds. and it cycles through the different settings)

 

Don't need to close the doors - I did mine sitting in the driver's seat with the driver's door open - I think the car needs to be in the OFF mode though.

 

Yep I changed mine as well but I'm the only driver..ever. Others, experiencing the Prius for the first time, like the fact that the factory default setting is that only the driver's door unlocks when it is approached and the handle touched. Security.

They also like the 'can't be locked inside' feature.

 

Wish someone had explained to me that the air conditioning screen is also used for heat!
