lol. I was just matching the distance of the pic pakit posted so show it was possible to exceed the manufacturers figures. I have many with 75 and 80+ mpg over much longer period. At a steady 50 mph it is simple to get more than 75+mpg UK.

 

Yup... and then you end up with something like this below. From visit at Cebit.

85% highway, winter tires 17", no grill blocks etc. Most of the time 140 kmh (where possible).

AVG 106 kmh (65.8 mph), 6.8 l/100km (34.6 mpgUS) over 1777 km.

 

Cherry picking 11 miles out of a tank of fuel proves absolutely nothing. Conversely, taking a cold started Prius and driving it uphill for 11 miles and showing that it got 16 MPG would prove absolutely nothing. Doing that is no different than the gambler who only ever talks about the times when he won at the track, even though he goes every day.

The mileage that you get over 5000 miles or so would be a far more realistic indicator as to the MPG that the car is capable. Even a tank can easily be skewed one way or the other.

My fuelly below shows the MPG I get over 58 tankfuls. THAT is a realistic indicator of what the car is capable of ... at least for my area and driving.

That is impressive. I bet you could have got 800 miles out of that tank of gas.

I did this last week. 50 miles going an average of 55MPG getting 70.2MPG.

 

Do some people read the whole thread or just respond to the last comment?

 

The OP posted a pic of his MPG’s and said so much for the EPA and EU cycle test. Someone made it a point that it is easy to get his numbers on short trips. Then on page 2 a post was made showing 70 MPG at 678 miles. That is amazing. I commented on his post and post and example of getting 70 MPG going an average of 55MPH. Am I off topic?

Let's remember the UK gallon is equal to about 1.2 US gallons, 20% more. So my lifetime mpg's would be about 60 mpg in UK gallons.

 

I suspect most of us exceed the EPA or European marks.
This is why it drives me STARK RAVING MAD when I'm told by others that their conventional car can do as well as my Prius and that their are a whole batch of 40 mpg cars on sale today (just look at the commercials-so there!).
When did the auto makers get the OK to advertise hiway mpg only (with no disclaimer) by the way?

 

I wouldn't walk across the street to see a car that ONLY got 40mpg! haha!

When I was talking to the salesman, he said that even though the sticker showed an EPA of 50, he had customers that had been getting 60mpg. Of course, take anything a salesman says with a huge grain of salt, but I did stop in two weeks later & told him that he can add me to the list of people who can get 60mpg pretty easily.

I think a Sonota hybrid would be stretching quite a bit to get anywhere near its EPA mpg. And quite a few other cars as well!
I've driven many cars & rarely will meet the epa mpg figures, but in the Prius... wow, how easy was that?

With a pre warmed up ICE and a traction battery over 60% charged up
I can make a Prius trip avg MPG go past 70mpg and as high as 150 mpg.
All I just need a good downhill start and as long as the Prius is driven
atleast 40 minutes/8 mile during the trip yeah I can make it happen .....
But
with a cold start 1 mile trip to the grocer, even if the traction battery
state of charge is 60% then I'll be lucky if I can get the Prius trip
avg MPG to creep past 25 mpg

I have a Prius V with 4000 miles. My overall average is about 50mpg and I have gotten as high as 57mpg for certain trips. As you mention, you certainly could devise a short trip where the mpg is much lower, but unless you always drive that trip, your mpg will always average out at a much higher value. Regular cars (gas engines) seem to stay with the EPA estimates regardless of trip duration and conditions. Hybrids seem to have more variability but average out in the long run.

 

Yeah hybrids are obviously defective. When I drive mine up a long steep hill I only get 12 mpg.

Yea, I get 99.9 mpg until the engine starts to run. I get on the average 41 mpg. How many of you posters out their really track you mileage for a really long distance, like over 2000 miles? Face it, for short distances, you get unlimited mpg without the engine running. But in the long run the mpg is no better than a gas powered car.

 

Whenever somebody says 'about' with relation to the MPG's they get ... you know several things .... they have no idea what MPG's their car REALLY gets, they're probably using the value that their car's computer shows, and they're PROBABLY rounding up.

If you ever bothered to calculate your mileage like most here do, you'll find your mileage is most likely nowhere near 50 ... probably closer to 42-44.

People who calculate and KNOW what mileage their cars get ,,, NEVER use the word 'about' ... at least I never do ... and I usually mention the tenths as well.

I never understood the need to embellish or inflate the MPG's that your cars get. A friend of mine who has a Suburban regularly says he gets 'about' 24 on the highway .... yeah ... right. Try 14 overall. He may have seen 24 flash a few times on his instant MPG display.

I've had the Prius for 65,000 miles and it has saved me about £6,000 in petrol. But you carry on believing the Prius is no better than a traditional car.

 

OK, you make a point, but realize because the Prius has an electric motor, it allows the gas powered engine to use an Atkinson cycle instead of an Otto cycle. This allows for increased fuel efficiency, despite the extra weight of the motor, invertor, batteries etc.

 

That's because the UK man is 20% more manly than a non UK man.....
