I think that if you are driving in a situation where the ICE must power the wheels, the best situation is to then have a power arrow to the battery, but none from the generator to the wheels. I presume a meter would show a higher # of amps going into the battery to be used when you can go into stealth.

    I agree to Eisenson strongly.

I am having the following experiences.
"no arrow" driving get good mpg and ICE only driving get bad mpg.
I use ICE to get the movement energy and to charge the battery.
Such good mpg is obtained that there are more few regeneration marks.

The 2004 Prius get the coasting very easily. But the sweet spot for the coasting my 2001 Prius is very narrow. Therefore, I run by the motor instead of the coasting.

My Prius has cruise control. I set cruise control as about 40mph no on the highway, and run it about 0.6 miles by ICE. The mpg at that time is about 40mpg and the battery is charged up. Then the lever of cruise control will be dropped once (or twice). Prius runs about 0.6 miles by the motor. Then ICE start and the lever will be up once (or twice). I do repeat this, it means running by 80mpg. I am calling this downhill theory of the flat ground.

actually my best mileage comes when the ICE is running and only going to the wheels.

here is a quick shot of screen

situation: first thing in morning just about ½ mile into morning commute. here i am coasting down the I-5 overpass at about 25-30 mph.

i have no fan, cabin heat, etc running. headlights and radio are on. as you can see, although i am in regen mode, my mpg is low. thankfully this doesnt last very long.

There are other hills in/out of Albuquerque... I commute from ABQ to Santa Fe up to a few times a week. Elevation changes about 3000 miles en route. At 75-80 mph, I get approx 43 miles per gallon uphill and about 47.5 miles downhilll. Mileage varies with how heavy the traffic is , especialy if i am accelerating going uphill after gettting out from behind a truck going 30 mph (or less) up a hill.
