Michael, i drove just like you did and like you, have changed my driving style to a slower, more steady approach.

thing is, i noticed that i have only added at most a few minutes to my commute time

I think that simply making a mpg display mandatory would improve many people's fuel economy, regardless of the car. Of course, in the Prius it's often pleasant to look at the display. In some cars that would definitely not be the case.

I actually haven't slowed down since getting the Prius, but only because our 1981 Toyota Tercel simply couldn't go the speed limit on some roads. What surprises me is how little I've sped up!

your comment about your tercel lacking power reminds me of my trip to Okinawa. my cousin had a Daihatsu with a 2 cylinder engine. every time we went up a hill we had to turn off the air conditioning or we woulfnt make it. as it was, with 4 people in the car, we would only be doing 20 mph by the time we crested the hill.

A couple things I am wondering:

1. Ray, how did you get 12.5 gallons in an 11.9 tank?
Or, do I need to reread my manual about the tank
size?

2. Wonderful tanks from Astroprius and Keller Prius.
I wonder why no comments on Astro's 700+ tank
which appears to be the best of any herein, less
someone can direct me to a higher tank elsewhere
(screen shot only as proof)

3. Which brings me to final thought, I wonder why
someone has not begun a 500+, 600+, 700+,
and 800+ tank club for members to post their
tanks. I think mfd screen shots should be required
or strongly recommended. I am asking in hopes
that a senior poster might begin such, or if not,
explain to a rookie why such has not been done
yet.

I am on my third tank.....

1st tank = 54.5 MPG
2nd tank = 58.5 MPG
3rd tank = 70 MPG (80 miles)

My commute is 5 miles to work, 5 miles home,
city/highway driving. This third tank I think
I can end up in the 60's somewhere as long
as work does not require a lot of short trips
during the day. If my commute were 10-15 miles
one way I think a 70MPG tank is quite
possible, which would be a 800 mile tank,
even though to actually get it on the screen
one would have to run awfully close to empty.

I have five 700+ mile tanks to date and more than a twenty 600+ mile tanks. I am currently at 716 miles at 64.4 miles per gallon and will top 800 miles on this tank. The highest I've seen is over 900 miles on a single tank here in the US.

 

Didn't forget them, if you see my post I only listed those that have posted a picture in this thread (have not looked outside this thread). The one Picture Ray posted is all black on my PC and Mac at two different locations. I do not doubt that Ray has done what he says, but I just gathered those that have actually proven it with a picture rather than just words.

I would be interested to hear about the 900 tank you saw. Was it posted here and if not, where did you see it? Did the person have an EV button installed, did they do loops at 40mph all day or take a long trip down from the mountains to sea
level, etc, or was it done in general driving conditions? I do not discount it, just wondering what the conditions were that yielded the 900 tank.

I would expect 600 and 700 tanks to be fairly commonplace, with some 800's, but it appears by this thread that 600 and 700 are not so common.

 

Finally got a reasonably good tank:

55.0 mpg mfd
55.06 mpg calculated
584 miles on tank
10.606 gallons

Before this, I was happy if I could get 50 mpg on a tank.
I think I finally got some summer fuel!

Trips I can do better, but on tanks I am hurt by my short 12 mile commute, with sometimes 25 mpg first 5 minutes still!

Also this tank went down a bit on one day with 95 degree weather, as
I use the AC.

Don't see how everyone gets 60 mpg here! I could do that staying off the highways, but driving 55 or 65 mph I see over 60 only going down hills. Trying another gas brand next.

 

Just got 52.4 mpg on my '02 Prius in mixed city/hiway driving - think that is darn good as the EPA on the '02 is not nearly as high as on the new ones.

Not sure why you can't see the pics, but there are others in these threads, as well as driving strategies that I was using back then. I've tweaked them a little but basicly the same techniques.

Tomorrow I'll post a picture of a tank over 800 at 65 MPG. Right now I'm at 784 miles so when I get to the chevron station near work I should be at 812 miles. That will be as far as I'm willing to push it. I'll post a spread sheet that shows the individual trip mileage for the whole tank with notes as well.

After that, I'm going back to my regular driving patterns where we go to lunch in my car and I run lots of errands and only get 650 miles at 58 MPG.

Oh yeah- The 900+ tank was posted over on the yahoo prius 2g group around a year ago. The guy drove back roads from PA to FL at 35 mph and got something like 967 miles at 85.7 MPG before he ran out of gas going up a hill. He drove the whole way with the windows rolled up and no AC and sometimes treated himself to a little fan. If he had filled it up as much as I do, he probably would have made 1000 miles. Hey Evan- wasn't his name Wayne?

It is really amazing how little people actually realize how futile rushing from stoplight to stoplight usually is. I have a nice litte laugh each time some roars past me to a stoplight, and I end up passing them by the time I get to the next light but hanging back and being able to watch the flow of traffic. I haven't noticed much of an increase in my drives either, plus I get there so much more relaxed! More than worth a few seconds.

 

Well, I don't have a cameraphone (don't have a cellphone period), nor a digital camera yet, but I can get 600 miles easily. I do pack an extra gallon after first pump shutoff, and I do extend beyond blinking pip, once as far as 85 miles (but that one I got 675 on a tank), so 600 should be easy. 700 would be pressing it, 800 would be impossible for me.

 

Took this shot this morning. I'll post the details in another thread. I guess my license plate went dyslexic on this tank.

 

yeah and I really doubt I'm going to beat it. I think without AC I can get 68 MPG for a whole tank but I just don't think I'm going to do it.
