I Beat the EPA--Post 'em here

New personal record!! This was only possible once I found an alternate (non-interstate) route for my daily commute to work (which is now 19 miles each way). My speed usually varies between 25-40 mph.

Hi Evan,

My Gray is just breaking in, purchased 7-23-07, have 3200 miles as of today.

Best tank was last week: 498miles on 9.56 Gal. for calculated 52.09 mpg, MFD said 51.5 mpg.

My cumulative mileage (dealer topped off tank) for 3195 miles on 66.75 Gal, is a cum avg of 47.87.
Driving is 70/30 highway/city. The first 500 miles I had no idea how to drive this thing. Currently seem to be averaging 50-51 for the cummute on a daily basis. Average about 55-60 for weekend errands.

Prius is running better every week. Very Happy and pleased with the handling, performance and especially the fewer trips to the gas station.

I can't keep up, I beating the Australian sticker economy but I can't do 60mpg US yet. I will not hold up traffic as I believe that behaviour gives people the impression the Prius is a slow car which it isn't.

In Australia the sticker economy is 4.4L/100km city, i get 4.3L/100km.

 

My brand-new 2007 prius has ~300 miles on it total, first tank of gas, looking at 63mpg even right now. I'm happy, I'll post a pic before I fill up.

This was part of a trip where I averaged 57 mpg over 3 tanks (mostly interstate or rural highway driving - going 60-70 mph, occasionally light drafting one second behind trucks). I always fill up when there's two bars left. The Prius has been getting better mileage since my wife has been driving it (she has a longer commute). Personal best is 66 mpg on a tank (only 480 miles, filled up a little early), but it might have been overfilled the time before, as that had lower mpg than expected. Lifetime average is 49.8 mpg, I expect that to go over 50 mpg before winter. Currently have 14,500 miles on the odometer. Tires at 39/37, everything original. All mpg values are calculated, not off the MFD.

It is very hard to believe you really have this good a gas mileage, especially since the display is showing a current average (using the bar graph only) of less than 25. You must have been going downhill for the previous 70Km or someone was pushing you. <g>

BTW, my calculations show 3.3L/1000km is equal to 71.28mpg. I don't argue with an HP 49g+ calculator. <g>

Please look again Gopher ... it's not reading 25 (as in 25 MPG) on the current display, but 2.5 l / 100 km. It is actually better to have "lower" numbers when stated as l/100km

I'm getting 5.8l (40mpg).
From the outside, looks like the suburbs / country, where you can get away driving 70km/h or less nonstop?

In my case, my one-way trip to work is currently 4km (less than 3 miles). So when gliding to motor is still running, as it takes me 5 to 8 minutes, and there's at least 15 stop signs.

My alternate route, under resurfacing construction, ends up being at most 5 stops, because I know the lights. The downside is I get to my destination faster, about 4 minutes, so the motor is still running usually.
When it was really hot this summer, turning off the AC, I got it down to 5.2 just for the trip one way.

The upside - my monthly mileage is a ridiculous sub-500km's. In three years I'm going to upgrade to full-EV and finally be able to beat all of you ! 500KM with 0.0 in my case would be possible.

Perhaps the EV button installed in my case right now would help - but the dealer is against it.

I think it's more important to think of gallons(litres) per month, rather than mpg or l/100km. How much petroleum you use in a month is the real measure of consumption. Back in the Subaru days with a commute of 15 miles each way I used 46 gallons/month, then with the new workplace 8 miles away and a Prius I went to a quarter of that. Then the commute got even shorter, so I switched cars with my wife for a better overall gas reduction. I probably use 8 gallons/month now for regular transportation.

That said, you're an excellent candidate for biking to work. All those stop signs, cars can't be going very fast, and under 3 miles, you don't even work up a sweat if you take it easy (that's what my commute is now). Only going 4 km at a time is a real killer on fuel efficiency and engine wear. An electric car would work well for you in bad weather, if only there were more options available to consumers. The EV button wouldn't take you 4 km, are you talking about adding a battery pack, a la Hymotion?

I achieved this in two weeks holiday taking my south-african wife around the Piedmontese villlages for sightseeing. I expressivly used secondary roads where there is little traffic (everybody is at the seaside) and the speed limit is 70 km/h (if not 50). The terrain is hilly, ideal for glinding down.....

What you are seeing there is an EU display, in L*100 km, where the lower the bar the better the mileage (or, less consumption) This measurement has it's advantages since I still get a reading while you are off the scale. I go off the scale when I'm doing less than 23 mpg, quite rare on a Prius. B)

Oh, that current average of less than 2.5 means that I'm over 95 mpg.

 

I got my first 60MPG tank, and it is only the second tank I've had in the car, so I am very happy

553.2 mi @ 63.6 MPG

I filled up 8.34gal which calculates to 66.35 MPG. I was a bit disappointed it wouldn't take more gas, but I wasn't going to risk an overfill, so when it stopped pumping I left it at that.

I have a few really good trips of 16+mi:

8/16 - 16.1mi 73.60 mpg
8/17 - 16.2mi 71.03 mpg
8/27 - 16.1mi 76.90 mpg
8/29 - 16.2mi 70.66 mpg

I drove a total of 19 days on this tank at 29.12 mi per day.

During this tank ScanGuage II reported 60.5 mpg, which is off by about 5.19% so I have adjusted accordingly.

Standard deviation for this tank was 5.14 mpg.

Had my first 600+ mile tank the other day! Made it to 604.3mi before filling up. Drove back and forth to work with the low fuel light flashing which had me a little nervous. Ended up adding just shy of 10 gallons for a calculated 60.6mpg but the MFD reported 64.5. This was my 7th tank of gas (in 5 months!) and 3rd best mileage behind 65.3 and 66.4mpg tanks (MFD). I love being able to almost effortlessly get such good mileage. I know I could make it to 70mpg if I would avoid the freeway and run the EBH a little longer. Anyway, that is all, go Prius!

 

I'd no sooner bragged about over 60 to the gallon than I went to Langley AFB, got caught in a closing of the outbound traffic that was monumental and damn near eternal. I still beat the EPA highway on that one, and that's becoming easier. It will a while before I manage to beat the city mileage...

I had a 5 minute segment on a flat road with traffic lights all over it at about 1L/100km and no I didn't pulse and glide. I even stopped a couple times almost, timing the lights. I'm learning.
That's 235mpg for 5 minutes on a flat road.

 

My new record is 89.398 MPG (372 mi and 4.17 gal). All city driving to work about 25 min and avg 35 MPH. The MFD said it was 74.5 MPG so it was just a little off. Normally I fill up at the end of the month regardless of what the tank is at just so I have an entry for the monthly fuel economy so I did not drive until empty this time.

 

Best tank thus far, 580 miles at 59.8 MPG. Given that well over half was highway driving, I'm almost 10% above the combined EPA rating of 55 MPG. I can routinely get >60 MPG on long trips (>55 on interstates). It's those accursed short trips in town that kill me.

That should be your best MPG numbers. Maybe if you go to the next Madison Hybrid Group meeting Wayne Gerdes will be there, he can show you how to almost double your town MPG.
