will be interesting to see if Hyundai up the spec of the Ioniq to counter this?

this is what we need, competition between manufacturers where spec etc gets improved at little or no cost to the customer

 

Yes each family's needs with respect to rear seat headroom would be different. My kids are 6'5" and 6'6" and they fit in a Prius as driver and a v in the rear. My needs aren't typical.

Sample quantity one MPG results don't tell me as much as hundreds of fill-ups over on fuelly. I find my real world results match the results that most drivers get and I use my cars in widely varying trips, terrain and conditions.

 

This is an addendum to my Ioniq Blue test drive.

The Ioniq often drives on just engine power directly coupled through the transmission to the wheels. In these cases, every power pulse is felt from the crankshaft all the way through the clutched transmission to the wheels.

In contrast, the Prius has a split mechanical and electrical path which means power pulses are dampened by the electrical path. This means the Prius is almost free of the engine induced, power-pulse, mechanical vibrations.

I should not be the only Prius owner who takes an Ioniq out for a test drive. Empirical science is built upon 'looking through the telescope.' Arrange a test drive and share your experience. Prius owners bring a background and experience that is foreign to most professional auto reviewers.

The diesels in GM cars of that era where converted gasoline engine block crap. The diesels they put into their trucks were some of the best on the road for the time.

 

They did improve the 1982 (XD block) Oldsmobile diesel greatly, though. But, 1982 is when the trucks got the 6.2 Detroit Diesel, replacing the Oldsmobile engine.

 

Neither the D nor the DX blocks were converted gas engines, they were designed for diesel from the beginning. The dimensions of the gas engine were used as a starting point and that was it.

Yes the Ioniq now even includes 3 years of free map data updates. Darn impressive and Toyota would costs on my car over $700 for the 3 equivalent map updates. Something my salesman promised me would be free downloads.

 

makes one wonder why manufacturers don't all just run google maps, which include live traffic & auto reroute antway. Put these garmun & navtec types right our of business for their obscene pricing - as they should have been a decade ago.
3yrs if maps only? Whoo-whee! so generous .... As though it's not a simple app on most everyone's phone anyway.

The Euro 2017 includes 3 years of free map updates too.

As the Free smartphone version of the software by the same Here Maps outfit also currently includes free maps, I am hoping that Toyota will extend this beyond 3 years.

Heading said that, when the company was last sold, they said that they reserve the right to start charging smartphone users in some way.

I am assuming that the car will not accept the free map data for smartphones.

Of course, as I and others have said, the preferred solution is to have access to Google maps via the car interface.

Note that there is also Mirrorlink, which the car supports. As well as petitioning Toyota to support Android Auto, (a very poor and immature product in my experience so far but one which no doubt Google will improve over time), those who care could join in encouraging Google to support Mirrorlink with Android Auto, which they could do irrespective of what Toyota do.

In looking for a new car, my wife and I drove the following cars:

Hyundai Ioniq
Kia Niro
2014 Prius Plug in - Fell in love with the car, but the seats were SO UNCOMFORTABLE!
2016 Prius V - The car we ended up choosing

The Ioniq and Niro are based on the same platform of hybrid tech but were vastly different driving experiences. The Ioniq offered more trunk space than the Niro with the rear seats up and the Niro offered more cargo space when rear seats were down. The Niro didnt feel as snappy as the Ioniq but that could be just me. Their weights of the Ioniq and Niro, as tested, was almost identical.

We loved the Ioniq (base model) that we tested. I achieved 54 mpg on the test drive and I wasn't the most gentile with the throttle. It does feel like a normal car going through the gears which would be familiar to many drivers. Both of us being over 6', we could fit a rear facing infant seat which was pretty amazing for such a small car. The sport mode is a lot of fun and would make this a great zippy car for times when you just want to have fun. Ultimately it came down to the price. Out the door was a bit more than we were looking to spend and the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) I was unsure of. While Hyundai has a great warranty they recently had issues with their DCT in their Tuscon SUV resulting in lots of unhappy people

We own a 2007 Prius with 180k miles and still going strong. We know how dependable they are which pushed us towards the Prius v ultimately.

We will definately be watching the Ioniq as it sells and see what issues arise. When our 07 Prius is ready to retire, I am sure there will be some Ioniq out there in need of a good home

The v is the freighter of the hybrid world at the moment.

I do wonder if the Rav4 hybrid will cannibalize sales from the v. It has a little more cargo space but does get way less mpg yet people LOVE their SUVs and think they always need 4WD.

 

that is a concern for the future of the v, and is currently being discussed in another thread.
people who own v's love the combo of space and mpg's, but there don't seem to be enough of them.

 

I agree. The R4h is the stepping stone into hybrids for the average consumer. I hope that this doesn't hurt the v so bad it ends up being discontinued. I find the v to be the best all around for cargo and mileage. My wife's 07 prius handles just fine in Maryland snow because of that heavy batter in the back providing traction.
