Now here is an interesting comparison of the size of the both cars (Gen 3 and Ioniq).
Now, I'm not saying that Hyundai copied anything....

Red outline is Gen3 Prius. White car is Ioniq.

I'm sorry but I don't consider a budget hatch that costs $37,500 base a cheap car. I know you have incentives but it still costs 37,500, be it via taxpayers money or yours. That's way over the price of the fully loaded Prius, even by EU Prices. You could get roughly 2 Hybrid Auris wagons for that (with no incentives), or 3 Toyota Aygos. And when and if it comes to Europe it will probably hit 50k.

What I'm saying is that we are still a long way from a 20k car that can do decent miles, be cost effective as in cost of electricity, charge up fast and have a battery that doesn't cost half a car or more to replace.

arescec - Great job! You really are skilled with the computer, and it makes it better for all of us.

All I can say is, to their credit Hyundai chose one of the best for their model. If you are going to be inspired, select the best to seek your inspiration. If I could purchase a G3 with all of the 2016 technical upgrades, I'd strongly reconsider my decision to stay out of the market.

How about doing a G3 and G4 profile comparison. I'm suspecting you will see the rear slope of the G4 will be lower than the G3.

    Great job. Thanks again.

A 2016 Nissan LEAF S that does 84 miles is $29,000 MSRP before credits or rebates. I'm guessing in 5 years you will be able to get a similar car with 100-120 miles of range for $25,000 MSRP and 200 miles range for $30,000 MSRP.

Is that good enough? Probably not, so another 5 years (2025, when Honda & GM build their fuel cell stack factory) and 100-120 miles will probably be down to $22,000, 200 miles to $26,000 and 300 miles to $30,000. By then the urgency of CO2 reduction will be clear to a few more people. If that's not good enough then people can buy HEVs or PHEVs and fill them with $7 per gallon gasoline.

I visited Croatia for one day a few years ago. Nice place. I have no particular insight into car prices there.... :)

In this thread, the IONIQ would do it as good or better.

    Chevy MALIBU - Ioniq competitor?

Source: 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Quick Spin [w/video]
    • 122 HP

Built, sized, and tuned for North Americans, this USA built hybrid is the first serious one ever seen from GM. Finally GM is competing with the Hyundai Ioniq.

That's just the gas engine. Total system output is 182 HP and 277 lb-ft torque.

    Full specs:
    2016 Malibu

I think the Malibu hybrid is a somewhat bigger car than the Ioniq but I haven't gotten around to comparing the various interior and exterior dimensions between them.

    Ioniq: 176" length, ~3,100 pounds
    Malibu: 193.8" length, 3,450 pounds

The Malibu hybrid has 17" wheels. The Ioniq hybrid model with 17" wheels gets essentially the same 20.2 km per liter or ~47-48 mpg combined city/highway EPA-style estimate. The Ioniq with 15" wheels is 22.4 km per liter or ~53 mpg combined.

Excellent post that includes this beautiful front shot:
The Chevy stylists have brought back the big front hood in contrast to the blunt nose Ioniq.

Then there is the amazing, truly astonishing engine and traction motor power:
    • 122 HP engine with the astonishing high pressure direct injection engine
    • 101 HP motor using rare earth magnets
Yes, it will compete with Ioniq as both will arrive in the USA market about the same time . . . at least nine months from now.

In the meanwhile, we can enjoy the fanboy Chevy and Hyundai press releases for the pending grudge match.

Now if GM dropped the Malibu hybrid powertrain in the Cruze they might have a chance at matching the Ioniq's 15" wheel 53 mpg estimate while also dispelling the wimp factor with 0-60 mph acceleration in only 7.0-7.5 seconds. Ioniq seems to do 0-60 mph in 10-11 seconds, according to a YouTube video.

Someone just claimed to publish Cruze hybrid spy shots but I'm not sure how real that is.

Wait just a dang minute. Sorry Bob, but the Malibu is not in the same class. Based on the pictures of the Malibu, that is not a picture of a competitor for the Ioniq. Neither the Volt or even the Prius. It appears to me to be a competitor for the Camry, or Fusion. Chevy would not bring out a car in direct competition to the Volt. Some writers appear to really be fearful of the Ioniq, It would be just as legitimate to say CHEVY MALIBU - PRIUS COMPETITOR? Does the Malibu "look more serious" than the Camry?

From everything I read, the competition in the hybrid market will continue to increase, and stiffen, which is good. Whatever the intended target, I think most will agree the picture above is a very handsome car. The quirky appearance of the Prius will discourage a lot of potential buyers. That's my opinion.

    Funny how we can agree:
model ICE hp EV hp EV/ICE City Hwy
    1 2010 Honda Insight 88 13 15% 40 43
    2 2003 Honda Civic 85 13 15% 40 43
    3 2015 Hyudai Sonata 154 51 33% 40 44
    4 2016 Hyundai IONIQ 104 41 39% 48 46.8
    5 2001 Prius 58 40 69% 42 41
    6 2016 Prius 96 71 74% 54 50
    7 2016 Prius Eco 96 71 74% 58 53
    8 2010 Prius 98 80 82% 51 48
    9 2016 Malibu Hybrid 122 101 83% 48 45
    10 2004 Prius 76 67 88% 48 45

Obviously the Ioniq is the inferior, bottom of the hybrid class, so not worthy. That is how the Malibu is competition for the Ioniq. Of course both are paper tigers for at least nine months.

How did you get 44 mpg for the Ioniq? The 17" wheel version is about 48 and the 15" wheel version is about 53 mpg.

According to the Korean estimates when converted to US gallon mpgs, the 15" Ioniq gets about 52.9 city, 52.2 highway, and 52.7 mpg combined. The 17" Ioniq should be 48.0 city, 46.8 highway, and 47.5 mpg combined, according to my calculations.

The actual Korean test cycle numbers before conversion are 22.5 city, 22.2 highway, 22.4 km per liter combined for 15" wheels. For 17" it is 20.4 city, 19.9 highway, and 20.2 km per liter combined.

Generally, the Korean test cycle estimates are based on US EPA test cycles but the final results appear to come out slightly more conservative than EPA numbers although that could mostly come from rounding and conversion errors. It's good enough for now until we have official EPA estimates.
