Featured Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor?

    I don't recall Toyota making any guarantees about customer delivery dates 11 months in advance. In fact, very basic details about the car including its basic body styling were not available until just a few months before deliveries.

    True, first info we ever got was about 3 months before the first car was sold in Japan.

    Waiting until shortly before rollout is preferred. Far too much can change in the meantime.

    In fact, that's what had contributed to the "over promise, under deliver" problem for GM.

    Its a walk back. Gm was saying 2016. Did "we" believe them? No. When a car company makes such a statement there is always some big doubts from past performance, but they are saying in customer hands, not on the production line. In 2010 gm and nissan just made their self imposed deadlines of customers shipped in 2010 with the volt and leaf. I don't think the gm spokesman is saying it won't happen now, but... you get the idea.
    The car companies probably shouldn't be saying 2016 then. Hey the whisper number on the gen IV prius was early 2015 or 2014. Then there were delays. No body bought the cars. Only shareholders would have been hurt on either of these things, but Toyota had a very good 2015, inspite of the slip.
    No they didn't do that. Some dealers may have, but those dealers are scum, the kind of dealers like congressman Mike Kelly that helped send gm into bankruptcy along with the awful management of wagoner and lutz

    But this is a hyundai thread. More competition from hyundai should help pressure gm and toyota to be more honest. Well if hyundai has been honest, they have had there share of problems in the past too.

    They sold the Spark EV, and have been talking the Bolt in terms of price, not lease rate.

    If the Ioniq at all is faster than the new Prius,then it's not by much !
    It sure makes some noise accelerating !
    I wonder why the Prius allways gets criticised for it ?

    They boast about the DCT being a normal transmission, not "rubber band"
    like the CVT. Sure it might not be faster by a lot, but the gear shift sensation of DCT gives the impression that's it's faster than it is.

    The same is true for me every time I jumped back into my 17 year old Camry (2.2L, 92kW), it feels like the car can go faster than the Prius, even though it takes longer to 100kmh compared with the Prius.

    In saying that, I feel like they are going down the path of Ford in terms of advertising; attack the leader, tell everyone the leader sucks (slow, rubber band acceleration, outrages styling, bad driving dynamics, etc.) We all know how well Ford is going with their hybrid programmes.

    I remember when the new gen 2 Insight was released, everyone journalist in Australia was saying it's a Prius killer, because it drives and feels like a normal car, $$$ cheaper than the Prius, battery only costs $1500 to replace (Honda was aggressive about telling others their battery was cheap to replace vs. Prius), blah blah blah. 3 years later, Honda discontinued it due to low sales. Maybe consumers are not as dumb as marketing department made out to be?

    That takes about 11.5 second for 0-100kph. Wow, a bit of a fail considering they are touting so much stuff, including horsepower. And it sounds shitty. I know people say that prius is loud, but this is way way louder than even gen3. It sounds as if tops out at some rpm and stays there for a bit too long....

    Hold on. Regardless of the vehicle, a video is not a reliable basis for coming to a sound conclusion. I'm no audio engineert, but there are too many variables: sensitivity of the recording equipment; placement of the microphone; recording volume, and probably a lot more variables that I am not aware of. I submit that until a sound engineer conducts a controlled evaluation, driving the same course, using the same microphone and recording equipment, and placing the microphone in a similar location, no comparison is valid. Heck. Remove my hearing aid, and every car is quiet, and there are no rattles. Can't hear my wife very well either.

    The professional reviewers are mostly 'car guys'. They like cars, and considering their generation age, and the relative newness of CVTs in the US, the cars they came to love likely had a manual or automatic step transmission. When they say the Prius is noisy, they really aren't talking about loudness. The way the eCVT operates means the engine sounds different than what they are accustomed too, and they are really complaining about it being different.

    When entering a market with a strong competitor, marketing has a tough job. Bringing up the leader yourself can cause an impression you don't want. Ignore them, and the press will do all the comparisons.

    Which raises question, is Hyundai actually attacking the Prius in their Ioniq promos, or is third party articles getting conflated into what Hyundai said? I haven't read all the links in this thread, but the few Hyundai press releases stayed away from attacking the Prius.

[/QUOTE]Considering that the Insight had an CVT, I don't see how it could drive much differently than the Prius, or did you have a manual option there? Of course Honda had to stress the battery cost, theirs was failing in the Civic.:cool: It is sorta a shame about the Insight2, it is actually a Prius c competitor, not a Prius one, but there was only the Prius for comparisons to be made. In hindsight, Honda should have skipped on the Insight2, and just exported the Fit hybrid.

    I'd like to think that I have an open mind, because I'm not in the market. I do own a 2015 TAH, and that is what I will be driving for the foreseeable future. I have seen no Hyundai video that attacks the Prius, but most are in Korean, so that makes it hard to be certain.

    I'd like to see someone (perhaps an auto magazine) eventually create a chart comparing the Prius, the Prius Plug-in, the Volt, the Ioniq, the Ioniq plug in, as well as other similar competitors, and evaluate them side my side. Appearance (obviously subjective), ride, handling, interior volume, interior noise, fit and finish, performance, fuel efficiency, price, warranty and so forth. All of which are measurable.

    I would suppose that the Prius would score higher in most of the measurable categories. My guess is the Ioniq will score higher on purchase price, and warranty. Personally, I like the pictures of the Ioniq (a subjective opinion). As I said, I'm not in the market, but depending on the Ioniq EV, it is conceivable I could become interested.

    Everything Hyundai said so far about the Ioniq,doesn't seem to live up to their claims .
    They said it has great head room in the back,but I watched a few videos now and it doesn't at all seem to be that good !
    In their home market the new Prius get's just 19 km/Liter while they claim the Ioniq get's 22.4 .
    19 L./Km would mean about 5,26 Liters/100 Km or "just" 44.72 mpg .
    As it looks like up to now,owners are getting well over 50 or even over 60 mpg with ease in real world driving .
    Maybe they have a real hard test cycle,but it seems to me that they underrated the Prius in Korea to make the Ioniq look better .
    Acceleration also dosent seem to be as good as expected,but then we don't know the conditions under what the 0-60 test took place .
    Maybe they were going up hill or the car was fully loaded .
