Featured Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor?

    Hyundai's chief R&D guy said the Ioniq would have a 1-motor hybrid drive with 6-speed DCT. However, on the cutaway view of the video (that civicdriver06 posted) it clearly shows a motor/generator and a traction motor. That's 2 motors. Now I'm all confused again.

    Look at the Hyundai video (page 22), and a label reads Starter and Generator..

    Bob, will you be retiring the your gen1 at that time, or holding on to it for more serious testing and modding?

    So did the gen2. With most hand brakes being unobtrusive, that or a Prius like foot brake make no difference to me.

    The Sonata hybrid and it sounds like the Ioniq have a HSG, hybrid starter generator. It replaces the starter and alternator on the ICE. It is belt driven, but like the newer smart alternators, it can declutch to reduce the losses when it isn't needed for anything. It is similar to GM's old BAS mild hybrid system; just lower power since the Hyundai's have a traction motor in the transmission. The HSG does the normal starter and alternator work, and it might provide some regen braking. At least it can technically, it is the smart alternator on Mazda's iEloop system that does the regen braking, but I don't know if it actually does on the Hyundais.

    Why doesn't Hyundai count the HSG as a motor for the hybrid system? Well, it is belt connected to the accessory pulley and not directly to the actual drive train. It also relatively lower power(10.5kW) when compared to the second motor of two motor hybrid systems. This would make it less effective in a serial mode and for adding propulsion to the engine, if Hyundai uses it that way at all.

    if the handbrake tucks alongside the seat, i see no problem. the angle of the pic made me think otherwise, but that would make no sense.

    Korean people aren't all that big,so rear seat headroom seems very limited in the Ioniq .

    The photo was of a car with a manual transmission, so the brake was engaged in it.

    Claiming that a car has 1 motor when it has 2 is a bit misleading. I know it can disconnect, but the main motor can disconnect too via clutches so we could say that it is 0 motor system? Or do they think one motor as in one ICE? Hmmm...

    I don't like them beating around the bush while promoting it as a complete novelty, best-in-class this and that, etc.
    I already saw few comments how Toyota's eCVT is old fashioned, can't even change gears, has scooter transmission while this proper transmission and an astounding amount of people that think eCVT has a belt. Oh my...

    And not to mention that the usual bunch of 11-year-old Prius haters is already going around trumpeting their stuff.
    Can't we coexist peacefully, I'm not going around trolling on the Civic's and whatnot. Have anything smarter to do? No?

    I would say 1 mg hybrid motor, and 1 starter motor. All regular gasoline cars since about 1925 had a starter motor, we just don't normally talk about them until they break and need to be replaced.

    The prius had belts until the gen III:) In japan people love the prius and aqua choices. In the US it is the hybrid, unfortuanately people don't like most of the choices toyota has made, which is why hybrids never get much market share. The hyundai simply makes different choices. DCT is used on the top of the line bmw and mercedes and porsches. Both toyota and hyhundai have put very efficient small atkinson I4 normally aspirated engines with batteries and motors. The prius layout was described by TRW years ago, but needed electronics that weren't available until the 1990s to work. The hyundai system needs even more sufficitated electronics but we have them now. both are advanced transmissions. The first hyundai dct transmissions were not very good according to car and driver. Hopefully they have improved here.
    I would not listen to 11 year olds. Life is too short. Who are these trolls?

    .....wow someone sure missed the mark on that. Someone better check Google. Average European male is 5 foot 10 inches. Average South Korean male is 5 foot 9 inches. One inch difference .... you really think car manufacturers are going to accommodate that kind of "whopping" difference?
    Ever sit in a Gen 1 Chevy Volt rear seat? According to that logic, GM manufacturers must be the same bunch of munchkins from The Wizard of Oz. I can't wait to hear the rationale for GM's teeny rear seat spacing.

    I just noticed that Hyundai Ioniq is touting 19,200$ price in the home market.
    Prius costs 20,560$ in the home market (toyota.jp).

    So I think we should expect similar final prices (or Ioniq will have less equipment in the base model to drop the price).
