Hypothetical question - PiP Potential 90% Hwy Commute

I have a similar commute to yours and averaged 70 mpg with charge at home. Adding charge at work increased to 80 mpg. I'm pretty much stuck there. Maybe it'll get better when it warms up. There is potential though, I managed 106 mpg over a terrible day of traffic going 53 miles distance but I didn't get the camera out in time. I only got the 105 mpg pic.

 

EV ratio will be low no doubt, due to the distance and charging once a day. I would look at the breakdown of MPGe for electric miles and MPG for gas miles to get separate efficiency.

Most of my 43-mile round trip commute is highway miles, but since it's heavier traffic I can get away with going 55 - 60 mph (especially if I find a slow truck to camp behind as an "excuse" for going so slow). I find a little better range on the highway than the streets which I attribute to the fact that I'm not stopping and accelerating from traffic lights. I get about 17 miles on EV under that arrangement, but it is slightly downhill most of the way. The whole commute averages about 90 - 92 mpg. I can't charge at work so I lose a lot going back uphill on ICE power.

 

Why stop there? You could move your average MPG to infinity by parking the PiP and driving the Rav4 everywhere. Isn't the point of driving a PiP to reduce the amount of pollution you dump into the atmosphere just to move your body around?

With the PiP, now, short trips will increase mpg if you ignore electricity as I do. I used to groan when my pregnant wife gets fast food cravings at night. I would be at 48 mpg on my Civic LX with a goal of 50 mpg. One night run to Jack in the box would knock me down to 45 mpg for the tank. I considered taking her Sonata but that is just wasting more gas to feed my obsession with mpg. Now, I happily putt around town in my golf cart. I even go through drive thru now that I don't waste gas idling. My wife is so much happier now that she doesn't have to get up to order her food.

I have the opposite "problem". My wife started to use Fresh Direct so we rarely go to those supermarkets short trips anymore.

I have a 69 mile commute. About 55 of that is HWY. I drive the non-highway around 35mph and highway at 65-85mph. I generally get 55 mpg. Though most of my driving has been since winter began so I expect it'll get a little better when spring rolls around. The best I had was 65 mpg and worse 48. If I had a charger at work I'd do better.

 

At least you got Blizzard Pearl. Now you have to get out the Sawzall and make a solar roof

How did pure freeway with EV boost work out? I've got a 60mile (120rt) commute and would like to drive around 70mph. Considering a PIP just because of a local $5000 rebate, the other option is to get a regular gen3 touring package (mostly for the LED lights). Also considering a Prius C, haven't seen many higher speed highway comparisons between the various Prius models.

On long distances is it better to put the car in HV mode right away and let the car manage the electric assist or is it better to blow the charge on EV right away and then switch the HV for the rest of the commute? (not sure if I'm getting my terminology right).

 

Yup, with the exception though of short trips or a commute with recharging opportunity.

For the 90-mile question, saving EV for burb driving is where it pays off. 50 MPG in HV mode makes not using EV power an easy choice.

 

Any theories on if a PIP or Prius C would be substantially different on a longer highway commute?
