on charging Li-Ion batteries, way too early to make any statements, but in the past year, i have gone to charging my cellphone roughly an hour a day. (sometimes every other day, with a car charger i can always get a 15 min boost) seeing if the Prius method of charging will extend the battery life...

unfortunately, i pretty much upgrade my phone every 6-12 months, so will not really have any data on it

 I completely agree with you. :hail:

In fact, I'm a bit exhausted to hear many co-workers here talk about "payback" when they really are the type of the people you describe.

I think it's okay to spend money by personnal motivation be it financialy viable or not.

No call yet, and no charge to my card. First week I expect is going to be busy. I have high hopes that I will hear from them tomorrow.

Latest word after calling them is that emails with rough dates should be going out early next week. Dealers will then follow up to arrange the exact dates.

In general the EV mode capability is even less relevant in a PHEV than it is in a regular Prius. By keeping the perceived SOC of the system high, the HV controller is encouraged to use a lot more electric drive in all modes of operation. Its much more likely to drop into Stealth mode at any speed, and even when the ICE is on you will be getting much better MPGs. You can see hints of this for a short period any time the battery gets up into the green range. The warmup cycle becomes more of an issue though. Block heaters and grill blocking should pay double dividends for PHEVs on short trips, as the warmup cycle becomes a much more significant portion of the total gas consumed. This is part of the reason there is still interest in the search for a high speed true EV mode. The best lead so far is the "Forced Stealth Mode" being worked on by the folks below. In a simplistic sense it simulates an out of gas condition to allow full EV driving outside the limits of normal EV mode. There are still some issues to be worked out of it though, last I heard. Once solved, this mod should be applicable to any PHEV conversion.

I want no part of that implementation. The ECU will register out of gas and warranty is guaranteed to be voided now. Just see the people that got screwed because they ran out of gas once.

Yeah, but something tells me that those folks aren't worried about it. When you show up at the dealer with a huge Li-Ion pack and a plug, a little code in the ECU is going to be the last thing on their mind when denying warranty service for your hybrid system.

I believe run-flat tyres are very heavy indeed.
I had a failed valve stem, a brand new valve stem a week earlier, Fix-A-Flat won't work on a broken valve stem. Like I said I was in the middle of nowhere with my wife and son, no phone coverage and no roadside service.

For a car used exclusively in the city this conversion would be excellent, I am just pointing out that removing the spare and replacing it with batteries isn't utilising a wasted space but the spare wheel well.

I guess to offset the weight of the run-flat tyres you can discard the jack and wheel brace although that does nothing for rotating mass.

    Bridgestone Turanza EL400-2 (OEM Tire per Tirerack.com): 19 lbs/tire
Dunlop SP Sport 01 DSST RunOnFlat (one of many runflat): 23 lbs/tire

I imagine that 16 lbs additional rotational mass (4 lbs/tire x 4 tires) could lop off something like 5 mpgs.

Congrats on you early adopters. I agree it is not fully a financial decision. What is your payback for leather, nice stereo, etc? At least this conversion HAS a payback time. Oh, and what is your payback over purchasing a Carolla? Oh never mind....

This company is releasing their product at a wonderful time.

Can't wait to hear the user reports.

+1. I am really curious to see how the Hymotion option compares with the 3rd gen Prius.

Well, I made the plunge a week ago (confirmation code #97:lock1:). Its been interesting to read the various posts here on who thinks it is worth the cost or not - I went ahead because I like the idea of going (ideally) 800-1000 miles between fillups, and I certainly don't mind being an early adopter. I selected San Fran as the install location so I can plan a vacation trip to visit friends and family in July/August or whenever they get to my number.

I'm planning on keeping the car looking stock (no decals/graphics). When I got my new Prius 10 days ago I opted for the magnetic grey color and I like it so much better than classic silver I had before - I don't want to mess it up with anything additional on the outside. But I will be taking some pictures of the L5 pack installation and will post them after the deed is done.

Thanks to everyone for their input - Looking forward to my new PHEV!!!:high5:

Oh really? Can you tell me what the price of gold will be tomorrow? Next year? Or what the price will be in the next ten minutes? Betting or predicting currency values is even riskier.

I am always amused at those who claim they can predict the prices and values for such items such as gold, silver, currencies, etc.

And last I checked, the dollar is on the rise against the Euro and most other major currencies.

dont know if this was meant to be or what, but after watching movie, was still early last night and nothing on and stumbled across a televised 4th annual "Power Up: Electrifying Transportation Summit". it was a 2 hour special on local public TV for conference held in the media centric city of Chelen, WA...

as soon as i turned it on, there was a spokesman for A123 being introduced. he talked about the LiPO4 technology. very interesting.
