Hybrids now worth the extra money

    Also, people are aware that gas could go to $5/gallon in the next few years, so the hybrids are holding their value very very well.

    When I bought mine in Nov 2005, I was guessing I would have to go 100k miles to get back the extra cost (Prius v$. Corolla). Seeing what gas prices have been doing, I suspect I will get full ROI at about 50 k miles now and that's just on gas savings, not counting the higher resale value.

    Alas, that resale value may take a hit when the 100 mpg technology becomes commonplace.

    I don't think the resale value will take quite that big of a hit when the 100mpg becomes commonplace. Mainly because this is going to take many years yet (when the current models would have already lost most of their value in depreciation). Even when it does happen, the demand will be so high that I suspect that used 60mpg Prius will still be a much wanted commodity. Toyota still can't keep up with the demand for most of their hybrids in a lot of their markets even at only 40-60 mpg at less than $3 a gallon.
