Hey EricGo, do you happen to have a link to the original document?

Okay, that diagram from Toyota makes sense (common sense) to me.

They have material CO2 and production CO2 more than a gas-only CAR.

Then the maintentance CO2 is slightly more for the hybrid (not sure how that could be, but whatever).

THEN, the driving portion of CO2 for the gas-only car is significantly higher. That seems right. Now add onto that, the CO2 that comes outa a Tahoe or any sub 15 MPG vehicle (yes, Toyota included, I admit that!) and the Prius wins every time...by a landslide.

Case closed, I'm keeping my Prius.

Let's see what the next anti-hybrid "study" can conclude...

Spinella said. "We undertook this research to see if perceptions (about energy efficiency) were true in the real world."

Did he forget to say he gets his bread and butter from the auto industry? And who defines, "the real world"?

When Spinella factors in the cost of gas, perhaps he forgot to include the "real world" cost. The military expenses behind securing the resource, degradation of air quality and subsequent medical costs, the impact of global warming... probably forgot to add that in. However, he was able to determine and apply travel distances made by manufacturing employees. We can spend all day guessing where he got his numbers.

    Chogan,

Your comments say it all. It is completely absurd. There is no possible way to interpret their figures and have them make a shred of sense.

Remember this TOTALLY bogus story? Someone on my350z.com pointed me to the spreadsheet. I'm not sure if anyone else here knew about it. Unfortunately, the XLS file was protected so you can't see their formulas and so you can't plug in more reasonable numbers. They're at http://cnwmr.com/nss-folder/automotiveenergy/.

However, their figures, as I expected are TOTAL BS. See http://www.my350z.com/forum/showpost.php?p...37&postcount=25 for my analysis. I can copy/paste here if you guys can't get to it w/o an account.

I love how they claim an unreliable vehicle like the Ford Expedition will last 284K miles while the more reliable Toyota Sequoua will last 175K miles and Prius will supposedly last 109K miles. I love how they claim a a Prius costs $325K to dispose of and a VW Phaeton costs $2.5 MILLION to dispose of. For some reason, they think a Prius owner will drive only 9K miles/year, Inisght owners will drive only 8K/year. Ford Excursion owners supposedly drive almost 15K miles/year.

(adding attachment of a ZIP of all the files at the 1st URL in case they decide to remove/change them)

I don't know.....I think you guys are missing the point. Tyhe point is, we should ALWAYS trust the numbers! therefore according to his numbers the world would be better off from an energy perspective if everyone bought and drove a Hummer.

I know it seems counter-intuitive, but please, please blindly follow his numbers.

    Earth may depend on it.

I am in the process of reading this post but had to repond to this statement. I am by profession an Operations Research System Analyst. Basically, a professional number cruncher to justify courses of actions. If there is one thing I learned you can use numbers to justify anything. The one thing you should never do if blindly follow the numbers. Never trust the numbers until you learn how they were generated and in what context can they be used. In my case it could mean lives, it the benign case it may only cost money or time.

I could be wrong, but I think CHART was being facetious.

You do have a good point though. Just like whoever said it (either Disraeli or Mark Twain)...There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Anyone ever see Penn and Teller's Bullshit? I bet they could come up with a great show based on hybrid misinformation. And they'd certainly through that article out.

Every vehicle goes through the same process from creation to final product. Tahoe probably uses much more energy in production alone.

I'm not a mathematician or statistician, but as the owner of both a Prius and a Tahoe, I find this story very hard to believe!
