This is an oil control filter that helps operate the Variable Timing Solenoid.

Show a picture of this to your mechanic and if they have no clue what it is then……Run

 

That's another reason for more frequent oil and filter changes.

This is our 1st Engine build using a brand spanking new Toyota Block assembled from the Factory. This includes the 2015 revised pistons and rings which is a game changer.

Of course we added some goodies such as a powder coated valve cover so we can own this build!

So if you buy a new short block these days, it WILL have revised pistons/rings? I’ve wondered about that.

No concerns about the paint holding in the heat?

 

Has that guy got a part number? I looked around on parts.toyota.com for a while once to find it, and had to admit defeat.

 

Where is that guy hiding? I don't recall seeing it, but it looks like it could be important.

 

Kind of buried inside the no. 1 cam bearing cap. See callout 15678A, here:



... which means I just answered my own question about the part number; 15678-0V010.

Somehow I had found that drawing back in January, then admitted defeat trying to find it again.

 

That explains why I didn't see it, and thankful Hybrid Pit already replaced it.
Is this going to be another maintenance item on top of the EGR cooler cleaning? I think my next vehicle is going to be a Model T.

 

In most cases I think it'd be a good thing to leave well enough alone, unless for some reason you're going to have the valve cover and that bearing cap off anyway.

I've rarely seen a picture of a badly gloopy one here, and I think only in engines with very neglected oil. Even the 'old' one shown up in post #83 I doubt was having any measurable effect on engine operation.

 

Could be easily cleaned? Would maybe be good to include in the gasket rebuild kit.

We completely tear down the assembly to check cam tolerance, bearing cap wear and many parts mentioned in the Toyota Bible!

Now do you want to take that risk by not taking it apart? It scares me to type that, but we have a whole box full of beat up assemblies that did not make the cut

I was replying to the post immediately before mine, which asked:

Often I will [quote] a post that I'm replying to so the context is clear, especially if some other posts came along in between. But sometimes I don't if it's really the post immediately before mine.

You guys are rebuilding engines, and you already have them disassembled to check other things.

I was responding more to the idea of "gee, I've got a Prius, should I disassemble my engine down to the cam bearing caps now and then so I can fiddle with the OCV filter?"

My concern there would be a larger chance of causing iatrogenic problems than of accomplishing anything useful.
