I bought a USB OBD device to connect to my laptop, but I haven't taken the time to try it out yet. I guess I 'just drive it' (and use the gauges that the PiP does provide for me). Heck, I've dang near had an accident just scrolling through the stats that the car already provides me!

(although coolant temperature would be nice since that would help me better know how close my car is to needing a second ICE warmup cycle as I finish my trip to work)

I computed it from the display on power off. It went 1.5 miles at 95 mpg. 1.5/95 = 0.016 gal. used.

With Torque app you can do exactly that:

This morning's (Monday) commute provided an unexpected surprise.

Traffic was heavier than that on Friday and I did end up having to stop for some of those lights I had been able to sneak through.

Despite the extra acceleration draws, the efficiency was still remarkable... strangely, it was nearly identical: 562 MPG

There was an extra surprise too. I ran out of EV about 150 feet from my parking spot. But when it switched over to HV mode, the engine remained off since draw from the battery-pack was below the usual threshold. I wondered if warm-up was triggered by draw or simply running out of EV. Now, I know.

I am very happy to see everyone is getting high mpg. I am only getting 150mpg driving on EV (5 mi mixed of local/highway).

all the computation and mode switching sound confusing..There should be an online class on driving a PIP ecologically?

150 mpg is amazing.. what are you complaining about? Everyone's mpg will differ depending on their commute situation.

I have to drive on LA freeways going uphill from the beach to Pasadena. My commute to work will have lower mpg, home is downhill thus higher mpg and more EV. I can charge at work also (as long as the spots are not ICE'd)

So please answer this for me: my understanding was that the PHEV has three batteries--the standard 12-volt that powers the stereo, nav, etc.; the lithium-ion that powers the EV; the standard Prius battery that assists the engine.

Am I wrong? Are there only two batteries? Does the LI-ON battery do double duty?

Next question: does it make a difference if you turn EV off *before* total depletion? If I do this, will EV power recharge as I drive on the ICE?

I think they were complaining because they only drive 5 miles and were expecting that to be all EV.

And for of us 150mpg (even 250MPG) is a really bad day.

I find these posts a bit ironic.. for someone that talked a big talk about the importance of reporting kWh and gas used.. you quickly switched to talking about large MPG measured over very small distances.

If you are doing an 18 mile trip, and take it easy enough to get 14-15 miles of EV range then its 3-4 miles on gas so at 350mpg that is .011428 gallons, at 562MPG its .00896, a difference of .00253.

What is the overall difference in MPGe for your HV/EV button games?

What is the measurement error of the fuel system? What is the effect of temperature and what is the temperature difference? How much slower did you drive on different segments while playing with the HV/EV button?

Getting less than '999' (burning any gas) while only driving 5 miles would not make me happy. In EV mode (and ECO), I think it is very easy to drive normally and not turn on the ICE.

The button is there, it gives us an option when to use EV at will. This post has nothing to do with other posts, its a place for us to share ideas and experiences with the added flexability of the button.

Personally, I have been able to take what I have read from others, and avoid the engine from coming on under certain trips.

Last night, I was backing my car into the garage, stopped, engine came on, turned car off, and charged. Doesnt get any better than that.

    Its all about the Button!

Since when? I have over and over again stated I recharge at home and at work. That's 2 recharges, 3.1 kWh each. The value is consistent. The variance is MPG, hence focus on that.

I push the button once to start the engine on the way to work and once again on the way home and drive along with the flow of traffic. How is that a game?

And why is 35 miles now considered small?

I did my first late night grocery shopping yesterday.

No button pushing for that entire drive.

The trip was all electric bliss.

there are only 2 batteries. when the charge depletes to the amount of the regular prius battery, the symbol changes from solid to barred as notification to you that you are now driving similar to a regular prius. the battery will recharge from regen whether you are in ev or hv and upto it's full capacity if you were going down a hill big enough which is not likely.

are you saying that the display is showing 150mpg instead of 999, while you are in ev only?

No complaint here on 150 mpg. I just couldnt figure out how to get higher than 160 for my 5 miles short commute.

Haha. I just want to be happier with my mpg.

Yes, it does! Finish backing into your garage and turning the car off before the engine comes on. :D
