I'm glad I stumbled across this thread! 2007 Prius, 118,000 miles, hybrid battery went kaput yesterday. Hit the 10 year mark on 02/07/17! Dealer where I bought it and had it serviced until 2014 quoted me $2,550 installed + tax for refurbished with 3 year/36k warranty or $3,298 installed + tax for new with 1 year/unlimited miles warranty. My Prius "guy" said he could do a refurbished for $2,200 installed with 2 year/ unlimited warranty. So I have a few options.

I contacted Toyota and they have started an "outside of warranty review". She said they will get back to me within 2 business days. Fingers crossed!!

Me too, this thread saved me a lot of $$$

2006 Prius with 118K miles, everything was just fine until suddenly the dashboard lit up with red triangle of death. Codes P0A80 (replace hybrid battery) and P3022.
Local specialty shop wanted $1750 to replace batteries with reconditioned and to install a charger to plug into wall outlet once a month. Not an option for me (and I really didn't like this solution). Another shop offered to install "new" batteries (from a after market supplier) for $3500, a lot of money to spend on an unknown product.

After I found this thread, I asked my local Toyota dealer about the Good Will program and they offered to call the local Toyota office and try to get assistance. I brought my car in, and they confirmed the diagnosis, and the next day they called me back with the great news. Toyota Good Will offered to contributed $2000 towards the new battery, so my total cost out the door was $950.

The dealer told me that it helped a lot that I had consistently been bringing my Prius to the Toyota dealer for service, so I guess that really paid off!

Would be nice to see some of the savings come back to support PriusChat or some of their advertisers/sponsors/supporters.

Pretty sure there is a Donate button around here. Or perhaps a purchase from the PriusChat store.

I have a 2007 Prius with 165,000 and a failing hybrid battery (I am not in a CARB state). I went to the dealer for diagnosis to confirm. Called Toyota and kindly asked about the goodwill program, relaying that I have owned 5 Toyotas in a row (nothing but Toyotas for last 15 years). I almost never use dealers for service. Toyota didn't offer any assistance.

Based on what I've read in this thread, it seems like a) using dealers for regular service and b) being relatively close to warranty coverage dates/miles are the biggest factors in whether or not Toyota will offer assistance.

Thanks for the report. It's a funny thing, some cases where I do not expect help they give it.
Just worth a try in some cases.

agreed. i think dealer service is key. they really play ball with the dealers, and i suppose they have to, to a certain extent.
when i told toyota i didn't service my 6 toyota's at a dealer, the phone went dead...

fortunately for us, there are other manufacturer's to choose from, but they are all tied into the dealership scam.

It seems so crappy that it is not consistent across the board. How about just giving everyone a deal without making them beg for it?

Another irritating scenario plays that plays out is for the people who take the time to beg for a discount and then are completely turned down. Especially when they can read here that there are instances where other people have gotten a discount.

good point. and also, there's no standard pricing for the battery. people are quoted anywhere from $2,400. to $5,000. or so.

Plus there are some unscrupulous dealers making customers pay for a new ECU, even though it isn't necessary. To the tune of an extra $1,000or more. Grrrrrr!

First Owner, 2006 Prius, 69,000 miles, California. Paid for dealer diagnostic test, HV battery needed to be replaced, dealer offered 4,100 for a new HV battery. I turned around and went home to write to this forum.
The warranty is 10yrs/150,000 miles. I am well under the warranty mileage, but I was over the year warranty by one year.
I called the 800.331.4331 number, explained this is my second toyota, and added that my parents also influenced my brand loyalty with their toyota brand loyalty, etc.
Their goodwill assistance was not as substantial as some listed here, but I thought it was a good enough offer considering being a year out of warranty. I ended up paying 55% of the dealer's 4100. Toyota Customer Experience negotiated a new price for service with the dealer, and then they gave me a credit on that new number. It's a new toyota battery, but only 1 year warranty, although hopefully that battery will last another 10 years... May have also helped that I service the car at toyota and had been to this particular toyota service maybe 4 times.
    Thank you Prius Chat!

If you get a chance could you post the part number for the replacement battery. It may be listed on the paperwork.

I'm curious if they sold you a new one or a rebuilt one.

they said it was new from the "factory". if it's not, that would be pretty messed up.

    That sounds great.
It's a little confusing technically as we are expecting 3-yr warranty on new batt.
But obviously you got a decent improvement over what dealer was offering.

It seems like after 2006 and few 2007 we are just not hearing as many cases of dead HV batts. Really wish we had some data of batt fails vs. model year. Meanwhile 2005/2006's are getting pretty far out of 10-yr warranty to expect full coverage.

Lately I've been taking our 2006 Prius at 160k miles on some road trips even over the mountains to Pittsburgh, and I am surpised how good the HV battery still seems.

The main killer of batteries is not using them. So don't let your batteries sit, drive the car daily

Well, it took a few days longer than they originally quoted, but it was worth the wait. There were issues with the dealership not getting corporate the information they needed, people were out sick, etc. Toyota ended up paying for the entire battery (re-manufactured with a 3 year/36k warranty)!!! I paid was $700 to the dealership for labor. Yay!

Did you get an option for a new battery? I know they offer the re-manufactured in CA, the only test market so far.

Yes, they offered me the remanufactured battery with 36k/3 year warranty for $2,550 plus tax and a brand new one with a one year, unlimited mileage warranty for $3,298 plus tax. I was more interested in the 3 year warranty that I was going to purchase that one. It's also the one they covered 100%, so I was fine with it :)
