Rented a diesel in France once. Had booked a compact manual "Opel Astra or similar" and for reasons beyond my understanding they gave me a Renault Kangoo diesel and no it wasn't a mistake. It was an experience and a half! In terms of performance, it loved the freeways with lots of power up its sleeve, but around towns I was basically driving a delivery van.
