Vci module, obd port to USB. Avail on eBay. $25. Voltage won't tell you condition til it's too late. I can tell u overall condition better by getting in car starting it, hitting ev and blasting the AC. I know how long it should last by experience
My best advice to ANYONE looking to purchase a used Prius is to have an android phone and the Hybrid Assistant and hybrid Reporter apps. You can perform an HV battery test using the AC system. All you need to do is warm up the car, fire the AC up full blast and press the "start test" button. The battery should start around 62-65%. Stop the test when SOC is around 45-50%. Then use the reporter app to provide a breakdown of the results.
Are the hybrid repoter and assistant apps available for sale online? Can it be used for only g2 Prius?
yes, I downloaded it to a Galaxy S3 phone from an app store. I think I may have paid a few dollars, but don't remember for sure.

Other than you responding like a Jack A** to a thread that's about a year old, what is your question? How to test the HV battery prior to purchasing a car? I think post 22 explains it. Not everyone has a laptop and techstream available like some of us. Apps are more widely available and can easily perform an adequate evaluation when used correctly. Nobody here has a clue? I'd venture to say there's several people here, who have probably forgotten more about a Gen 2 Prius than you'll ever know...……..
Maybe this is a really dumb question but can someone please explain how the information gets from the car's battery to the phone app? My daughter's 2007 does not have blue tooth so how do you connect the phone to the battery? I've been around this car for a total of 2 weeks now so it's foreign to me. It's been sitting for those two weeks while she is in self quarantine and I've been doing maintenance on it. I drove it to work and around town yesterday and paid attention to those bars. It will sit there at 4 bars typically and at one point dropped down to two purple bars. Then I took it on a 10-15 mile drive or so and had some steep climbs and descents. On the descents it boosted up to 6 bars and then I jumped on the highway for about a 4-5 mile trek back home. It dropped to 5 and would fluctuate between 4 and 5 bars. Seems like 4-5 bars is about typical. But like I said, this was a short drive. The car is a 2007, has 285,000 miles on it, had the gas engine replaced at 200,000 miles and I have no idea if the battery is original or no. She says she has some maintenance records but I haven't seen them yet.
If you perform a google search for hybrid assistant, or click on the link below, it will take you to their website. They have a list of recommended OBD2 Bluetooth devices that will plug into the OBD2 port. The phone app will link to that device. It's just like a code reader, but with no cable. Hybrid Assistant I use the OBDLink LX. It runs about $50. There are other, significantly less expensive devices, but the exchange of information may be too slow for the app.
This is a great reference book, but I have one question on it. At page 21 it says “Draining the 201.6-volt battery-pack while in long-term storage is never a concern. When you shut off the Prius, an electric-relay automatically deactivates to cut the connection to the hybrid system. So it isn’t even connected to the rest of the system until you turn the key again.” I thought longer term storage could harm the HV battery due to internal resistance.
That’s a old reference book. You are quite correct they do tend to self discharge especially if there old And corrosion has set in. Now there all very old. Some can sit for a long time and start up some can’t just depends how healthy it was when it started it’s storage.
Right. The NiMH batteries will self discharge after a long time in storage. But what John meant was that the car will not discharge the traction battery like it discharges the 12V while it's off because the traction battery is disconnected while the car is off.
