This worked like a charm, and so I logged in mostly just to say, thank you very much!!

However, as I seem to have an endlessly inquisitive mind, might you also share with us how in the world you were able to identify the precise components and sequence of the "chicken dance"? It doesn't seem likely that it's set out in a service manual anywhere...

Anyway, thanks again for helping out what I'm sure are a ton of grateful people.

First, I didn't develop or figure out anything. This was originally published by a Toyota Service Rep (to the best of my knowledge) back around 2005. But of course, it got lost in the sheer amount of threads on here (it is still available but hard to find). I put together this sticky because I just thought the info was too valuable to lose and I was trying to make it easier for people to understand. The only credit I deserve might be the idea I came up with to make it a sticky and to refine the procedure so all could understand.

I just purchased a new SKS FOB, Part #89994 47061 from Daytona Toyota, through Amazon.

I can't get part B of the programming to work. This FOB has a black logo on the back, not silver. Is the silver logo the definitive indication that it is a SKS FOB? At this point I'm not sure if they sent me the wrong FOB, or if I just don't have the chicken dance down right.

    Thanks

Dear USN: Thanks so much for your patience in this thread. I have a question (I may have missed it reading all the threads):
Both my fob black Keys to my 04Prius have lost their functionality to lock/unlock though they work fine when inserted to operate the car. Can I use the 'chicken dance' to program new keys, or is it more serious (i.e. a trip to the dealer)?
    Thank you.

Sounds like you need new batteries for the fobs.

If you're trying to program a black logo fob, you should be using procedure C. If they sent you a black logo fob and you ordered a SKS fob, they def sent you the wrong part. The silver logo is the definitive indication of a SKS fob.

I'm betting you can. I would replace the batteries in them before doing anything. There is likely nothing wrong with your old fobs. I would take them apart, clean them up with alcohol and let them dry out, then replace the batteries.

PS: Can you delete all of post #165 and replace it with a period (click on edit, highlight all and replace with .)? I'm trying to keep this thread clean.

Thanks: This worked like a champ and will save me a trip to the dealer

    Willco.

P.S. I looked at the U-tube video (a previous post), cut the rubber around the alarm, and restored functionality with a new battery. I've ordered a key from Amazon since it's looking pretty bad and will let you know how the programming goes. Thanks

You don't really have to make a slit in the fob, just stab the edge of the stuck button with an exacto knife and lift up. This will free the button and won't deform the fob

Success with programming the BLACK fob!
I was able to program a new "non SKS" fob with some struggles. I know that this is mostly an SKS thread, but here's my experience with procedure C. Like most, the ON/OFF programming was straight forward I then tried Procedure C, but no joy. I got to step 10, one lock/unlock cycle (not 2) but subsequent steps didn't work.
I found a slightly different procedure under a different thread:

Finally! How to program a non-SKS key/fob. Detailed!
Read more: Finally! How to program a non-SKS key/fob. Detailed! | PriusChat

Post #68 in this thread from Scott121. His procedure finally worked, and many others reported success also. You might want to post this as "Procedure D" or make a note that if Procedure C doesn't work (I think it did for some people), they might look up this modified procedure.
Also there was an interesting discussion about a limit of 128 programming tries from robH in this thread. Although I flapped my wings and did the chicken dance several times, fortunately I didn't reach this magic number. But this might explain why some used fobs couldn't program. There was speculation that this limit didn't apply to the silver (SKS) fob.
Thanks USN. In the end I spent more time than I expected, but I saved many $$ by ordering this $104 key and reading the comments in this thread I even resurrected one of my old black fobs.
    Cheers,
    Gary

I tried a number of times and nothing was working, until I tried the chicken dance as an uptempo number, and then everything worked great.

Just purchased an 06 Prius with only one fob. I ordered a new SKS from a dealer through Amazon and the Procedure A followed by Proceedure B worked perfectly. It took me a couple of tries to get it right. It seems easy when you read through it but doing it for real seems to require a rehearsal or two! Thanks for posting this. Saved me close to $100.

    Gotta love this site!! (y)

On a side note, a few pages ago in this thread, I bought a new SKS fob off amazon and programmed it, after my original SKS fob stopped working. Well, someone posted something on fixing the prius fob by cutting it open, yesterday I was cleaning the junk drawer and found the broken fob; I was about to pitch it and figured "what do I have to lose?" I cut the unlock button open, bent it outward, put a battery in it and now I have a third working key fob! Bonus. :)

I bought a replacement SKS (silver logo) Fob on eBay from a Toyota dealership for about $95. Received it in the mail today, and had it working in less than 5 minutes. The only problem I had was that my wife couldn't stop laughing while reading me the instructions!

Thanks for all of your effort in getting this procedure to the masses!!

best to buy new, it'll be cheaper in the long run. A used key needs to be reseeded, which will be more than the new key cost...in most cases

Our new (used) 2008 came with only 1 remote so I bought a new SKS fob from Daytona Toyota for less than $100. Followed the "Chicken Dance" instructions and stuck the landing on the first try!

Thanks to all the great members of PriusChat.
