I was able to program my Smart Key (purchased new from Amazon) using these instructions. Thanks for saving me a couple hundred bucks! One slight difference in my experience: I had to do step 9b twice to get it to work, but on the second simultaneous button press in 9b, the lock/unlock cycle happened immediately. There was no need for step 9c at all for me. The new key is working great and I appreciate all the help that went into this!

    PROCEDURE B
9c: Wait about three seconds then press the lock key on the NEW fob. If successful the lock/unlock will cycle once indicating success (It may take a while for the lock/unlock cycle. I've seen it happen just as I was ready to say, "well, it didn't work". If you wait for a long time and get no cycle at all, complete step 10. and test to see if the SKS functions of your new fob work. If they do, pls report that on this thread).

I’m happy to say the "chicken dance" actually worked! It took my husband and I about 20 minutes to complete the two programming protocols. We used your (usnavystgc) directions. THANK YOU!

We didn’t get the final confirmation response on the second programming task (Procedure B, 9c)…so we removed the key and it worked anyway.

    I ordered a new key through Amazon.com.

Good for you guys. I'm glad people are having success but, I wish I could figure out why some people have no issues with the procedure and others have differences.

The end goal is that all achieve success and we are seeing more and more of that. :)

It's been a while since I used this procedure in the old thread:
Finally! How to program a non-SKS key/fob. Detailed! | PriusChat
but basically, I have a non-SKS car, and this procedure worked perfectly with black key.
I also tried this procedure with a silver (SKS) key and it will start the car in the slot, but will not unlock the doors.
I forget what I paid for the keys, both were off eBay, the black one was used but a spare in someone's drawer when they sold the car off, I think it was $50-$80.
All in all, a wonderful resource here - PC saved us a lot of money.

I recently had the battery die in the original fob, it caused the panic alarm to go off a few times before I figured out what was happening.
Also, we had a recent episode where the fobs would unlock the car but not lock it, but it would lock from the door. It turned out that the trunk didn't close all the way (our mat is scrunched up and is getting in the way more often now) and the remote lock function doesn't work when a door is open.

Thank you so very much usnavystgc. I bought the new sks fob from Amazon and followed your procedures. It only took a few minutes and everything worked perfectly. I spent a total of 118 instead of the 300+ the Toyota dealer quoted me.

Thank you! I just successfully programmed my new fob from Amazon (chrome logo, $120) for my 2007 w/SKS. A few notes:
    1. Replaced batteries in old fob
    2. Read through the instructions a couple of times.
    3. Went through each step quickly - didn't over analyze and just full speed ahead with each step. Salguod's simplified directions came in very handy.
    4. Did Step 9b twice
    5. 9c "failed" (nothing happened when I pressed the lock button on the new fob) and thought "well, it didn't work." Opened door, got out of car, pressed the lock button and success!

Follow up question - can I purchase a used fob from ebay and program with Procedure A only so that it'll start the car while inserted in slot (and use a spare key to open doors)? I just want to have a third fob for visitors and babysitters to use in case of emergency. SKS functionality not a priority for this third key. Any info is much appreciated.

It is my understanding that you can however, I've never tried it.

On my 2006 with a new fob purchased from Toyota parts store online, after many many tries, I was able to program it using the "chicken dance" but I had to modify step 9c. Instead of "9c: Wait about three seconds then press the lock key on the NEW fob...", I had to press the lock key on the new fob WITHIN 3 seconds. So the instructions should read:

"9c: Within three seconds press the lock key on the NEW fob...."

If you wait 3 seconds to press the lock key the system acted like it cancelled the Add mode. As soon as I did this the first time, the lock/unlock cycle came immediately and my new key was programmed.

    Thanks for the updates.

My 2007 with SKS lost a fob tonight..... the buttons are no longer "pressy" and even after replacing the battery, the fob does NOTHING. Thankfully, I had the spare fob up in the key bucket we keep.

So word on the street is to buy a new one from Amazon and I can key dance program it? I do have Techstream. I wonder if using that would be easier?

I bought a used but "like new" black fob off eBay for $81.00, since the original fob that came with the car was setting off the panic alarm, despite new batteries. I tried first waiting 3 seconds to push the lock key in step 9c, nothing. I turned the car off, re-entered programming mode, then pressed the lock key immediately after holding lock and unlock simultaneously. Right away I got the doors lock-unlock once acknowledgement sequence. Turned off the car again and locked it from the outside with my new fob.

Now we have two functioning replacement fobs, one sks fob that only operates the ignition, and one original fob which only operates the ignition. I suspect that this car came with two keys, and that we're at the 5-key limit.

    Wunderbar! (y)(y)

The steps outlined in the first post in this thread worked perfectly, and on the first shot for my 2007 Prius with SKS.

I am now relieved to have two functioning SKS fobs again and now I can un-stitch the original fob from my pocket because I was so afraid of losing it! lol.

Let me get this straight after browsing this thread - can I program another SKS fob and have three fully functioning fobs?

The fob you have that's not "pressy" (made up word) anymore, it's probably just stuck. Just an exacto knife and pop the button back up so it'll be "pressy" again. No need to buy another.

One car can be programmed with up to 5 fobs. Once all 5 registries are used up, then you have to start deleting. I wouldn't have more than 2 on hand....waste of money and you use up the 5 registries prematurely.

I will try that.... but I dont know, either of the buttons work anymore and it happened suddenly.

Out of curiosity - I have Techstream. Is deleting fobs one of the tasks I can perform with that? Not that I plan on it, but you never know what kind of trouble I can get myself into :D

I'm pretty sure techstream can do it, but I've never had to use that function before. It can delete but you would need additional special powers (not like superman, but like a locksmith clearance code) if you lose all your keys.

Here's a youtube video to address the stuck button issue.

It worked like a charm*. *Other than the final "press lock button on new fob".

Other than that, it looks to be Scmuckatelli-proof; both SN and ENS!

Thanks for these instructions. I got home late from a week long trip-- went to unlock my car at the airport and realized I'd lost the key somewhere 3000 miles away. :( My only question is about the actual key-- if I buy a new fob, can I have the little key cut at most key shops or is there something tricky about it?
