How to Program a New Key Fob for Full SKS Functionality

I don't know as I have never tried gluing an OEM fob back together. You would need to find out the type of plastic the fob was made from and then use suitable glue.

It might be better to just buy a cheap shell and transfer the PCB and RFID chip over to that. Most of those just snap together.

 

Well, easier than that is just using CA/Super Glue, as I've been doing, but it's not perfect. Too bad the fob doesn't use screws to hold together -- and too bad the battery cover in the fob uses such tiny screws that strip themselves out practically when you look at them!

 

Just wanted to make a post to say thanks again for this great information. It's an oldie but a goodie.

I've used notes from this post many times over the years.
As much as I think I have it memorized it's good to be able to refer back to it.

Latest one is where someone had lost all keys. And they thought they wanted to only program the initial key and no additional keys.

Fast forward a week and then they decided they did want a second key added. Took me less than 10 minutes with the notes from this post.

One addition to help save time. Rather than physically opening and closing the door using the handle, I simply press the plunger on the door frame to "open" and "close" the door.

 

Successfully programmed two new keys for my trusty 2005 Prius! Total cost is $130 for two new SKS keys. Now..I need a locksmith to cut three blank keys.. Maybe Home Depot can? Anyway, thank you for this helpful guide!

I bought recently two blank Prius keys online and went to a local locksmith to cut them for about $7 each. They work fine.

I'm guessing Wind23 is asking where was the SKS fobs purchased from? I would like to know that as well. I found a Amazon link in earlier posts but that's for older car models. I'm looking for 2014 model.

I just bought 2 OEM Toyota Prius 08 key fobs on eBay from Santa Margarita Toyota for $158 each and free shipping. I tried new aftermarket, I tried refurbished, I tried old electronics in a new case. None of those would program SKS. I have $400 in 3 separate trips to the locksmiths, tried 3 different ones. It wasn't till I bought OEM till it worked.

I would be money ahead had I gone OEM to begin with and 1 locksmith call.

Whatever you do, stay away from Wesley Chapel Toyota. They charge $298.75 for each key fob and 2 hours labor to program at $180 per hour. They charged me $186 to tell me my key fob was bad, which I already knew for free. Definitely a Stealership!

 

Programmed another key. This crazy procedure works like a charm. Thanks so much. I just moved the existing physical key from my old key to this one, but I might see about getting a locksmith to make a new one.

or EPOXY...that's what I ended up having permanent success with when making the plastic cover for the hole where the irritating orange panic button was. I got sick of bending over and having the panic button go off when the fob was in my pants' pocket...

 

Sounds great. I don't have a dashboard slot, though, on my 2013 Prius. Anyway to program a used fob?

 

If my old key fobs unlock and lock button won't work will I need to pay someone to reprogram it? I'm trying to program my new fob without any success. Any advice?

 

Hi I'd really appreciate some help getting my replacement Key fob to unlock doors remotely.

2008 Gen 2 Prius, One original non SKS (black logo) key fob still working.

The replacement Fob i've bought has lock/unlock button, and an additional red button. The new fob has no Toyota logo on the back (not OEM), is this the problem?

From page 1, procedure A has worked and the replacement Fob now starts my car.

Procedure C is not working however, I cannot program the fob to remotely lock/unlock doors.
I make it to this step:
9. Car should lock and unlock doors twice to verify it is in add mode.

My car locks and unlocks doors only once (is this a problem?). I then try make the car recognise the new key per step 10/11 and nothing happens. I've tried the procedure at least six times and cannot get it to work.

Do I need to purchase another OEM fob and try again? TIA

 

I used this procedure recently and it worked flawlessly. I used the steps for an SKS version FOB.

 

This is likely a fob for use in the North American market. You need a (two-button) fob that is for use in Japan/Aus/NZ market (if Hobart is Hobart, TAS). With the fob you have, what you have got is the best you will get as the radio frequencies for the other functions are different in the different markets.

 

Thanks for your response Dolj. I was not aware there were different standards for key fobs around the world, I am indeed in Australia. I think what you are saying is that all the three button fobs (with the red button) are designed for other countries and wont work for my car, and that only the two button types will work?

What would be the implications if I lost the one original key, leaving me with only my one existing replacement key (with red button). Would I be able to program another key fob for car starting and remote locking with the replacement key, even though this replacement key does not work for remote locking?

In other words, is it possible to get a new key fob working using only a new replacement key that's already been programmed to start the car?

Just trying to decide if I need to buy a replacement key now, or if it can wait. Thanks again!
