How to Program a New Key Fob for Full SKS Functionality

You might need to delete the stored fobs and add the 2 you have. You would need help to do this.

Redid chicken dance. New fob now has complete functionality. Changed battery once more in the old fob... it still doesn't have proximity sensor functionality.

Strange.

1. Check if any of the buttons are stuck in the down position.

2. Try to do the chicken dance with the old non working fob. Reverse order, use new working fob as original fob to duplicate.

Step 2 is just a guess on my part, follow at your own risk

 

Got my Smart key fob from the Florida dealer in just a few days...free shipping, $104 total. It arrived yesterday. I printed the first page of this post for reference, but used the "Concise" version on page 10 to run through it.

I made an error the first time. The second time, I thought I had it right, but no go. But, on the third try, it worked perfectly. Sweet! Had avoided replacing our lost key on our 2008 Prius for a couple years, but once I read this, I thought it would be nice to have a backup key again.

Eureka! I did the dance with by switching the new fob and old fob in the order. Now both properly function! Thanks! >

However, I am having problems with the SKS programming. Both of my old fobs no longer would unlock/lock the doors with their buttons or open the doors when having them near the handle. This continued even after replacing the battery on both. So I decided that the SKS functionality was probably broken on both. I bought a new (chrome plated) SKS fob, and am getting stuck on step 9a - it does not cycle the locks on the doors. I am not surprised that it doesn't, since it didn't before I started the programming, no matter which old key I use...
I've also tried doing the switch where you simultaneous button press the new one first. In doing so, it will cycle through the locks twice. Then I press the buttons on the old one and nothing happens.

So since the SKS functionality is lost on the old keys, does that mean I'm SOL? Someone told me something about how if the battery was bad in the key for too long it would lose it's programming. Is that true? The second key had definitely had a bad battery for a while, and now even with a new battery it doesn't work.

What are my options here? Dealer only? I read posts about techstream in this thread but how dangerous is that?

How long have you owned the car? Did the buttons on the fobs ever work?

 

I've owned it for about 5 years, my mom owned it before that (she bought it new in 2005). Yes, the buttons on both fobs did work at one point. I changed the battery out about a year ago when it stopped working. At that point, the buttons worked again and the magic-nearby-the-door functionality worked. Only 1 week after that, the buttons stopped working but the magic-nearby-the-door still worked... up until a week or two ago.

Edit: Also the buttons do feel like I can push them. They do "click", so I don't think they are stuck.

 

The rubber on the keyfobs has probably degraded to the point that you can't press the switches inside the keyfob. Take a look at Replacing an old remote key | PriusChat for a link to the eBay site selling repair membranes.

 

From your description, it should be a battery problem. Try changing both batteries on the fobs. There's a small red light that lights up on the fob when you press a button. Make sure none of the buttons are stuck, including the horn button.

Take the working battery out of the new fob and try it on the old fobs

 

Thanks, both of you. I ended up figuring out that a few things were going on:

The rubber had indeed degraded. I could click and hear the unlock and lock buttons but not the alarm/horn button. So I took something small and picked up the edge of the rubber on the horn button side, and it clicked back into place after a little nudging.

The "new" battery that I was trying to use was out of charge, even though I had never used it before. It was from the same package as the one that wasn't working anymore and already in one of the keys. I bought a whole new pack and replaced the batteries in both of the old ones and they both work now!

I decided to keep the new key I bought, since on the old keys the rubber and mechanism to pop out the physical key were both worn down. I also had a suspicion that maybe the wiring or problems with the rubber were causing the battery to run down faster than I'd expect (shouldn't they last more than a year?) Now that I had the old keys working, the procedures in this thread worked perfectly. Quite a relief. Thanks!

 

The battery drain is caused by the stuck horn button. That's constantly sending a signal and using up the battery.

It worked, got my new fob from a toyota dealer at a very good price, 20% less than amazon. You can do it yourself.

 

One of my Prius keys was lost/stolen (luckily I still have possession of the remaining original key). If I go through the chicken dance with a new key (to make it 2 total keys in my possession), will the old key that I no longer have still work to unlock the Prius, or does this process deactivate any keys that do not go through the chicken dance?

 

Anyone else interested in doing this (notice this groupbuy has ended)?

 

There is an option in Techstream (if you have it) that will "remove all keys except this one". I suggest you use that option (or pay Toyota to do this) before you do the chicken dance with your new fob, if you are at all worried about the possibility of the lost/stolen fob being used by some unauthorised schmuck.

Does the "Chicken Dance" work on used, previously programmed smart key? Or does it only work on new never programmed key?
