I was 39. We moved up the road to a nowhere place called Port St. Lucie. Much worse than W. Palm Beach or Miami for jobs & wages.

One big problem here is old people. Many of them have 2 or 3 pensions, SS, etc. But, they are so greedy they run out and steal jobs from those who really need them. And I'm not talking about Walmart or pushing shopping carriages. They go for the good jobs more than not. Beware of what I'm telling you.

Unless you have check(s) in the mail and don't have to work don't move here. It's not the utopia it used to be. We have outrageous auto & homeowner's ins. Properties are way too high. But, if you want to escape from the brutality of winter like I did I wish you luck. perhaps you'll do better than I have. You see, I obtained my Bachelor's degree at age 48. Everyone told me 7 years ago I was too old to get anything good. Talk about negativity. Well, I haven't given up after 2 entry level dead end shit jobs with no future, and the school board which is merely a month to month partial bill payer. (Pays for part of the Prius).

The very best part is the school board members found a way to screw every sub teacher out of paying into their social security funds. This was done to save money. (I pay house taxes for their fat salaries). So, on top of everything else I am no longer for disability SS because I don't have enough quarters in the last 10 years. I don't use the word hate often, but I really hate the school board people. They have done me and others a great injustice. Being a diabetic I could become disabled at any time. I have 7 more yrs. to go to get my SS @ 62. Aint life wonderful? If nothing else I'm gonna make it just to get some of my money back.

That is where you are so wrong. After my first two days on here, I was going to leave, but I received a bunch of e-mails telling me to stay. See there are many PC'ers unlike yourself who value a differing opinion and don't mind hear another POV. You are one of the top three in my book for being pathetic.

I don't blame anyone but me for my FL situation. But, the more people there are applying for the good jobs the harder it is for me. I only had an AS degree when I moved here in 1990. It held me back. I went to a private Christian college, which gave me an excellent education. However, nobody is real interested in hiring me. Unless of course it's at an entry level that any 18 year old can get.
I work most every day in a high school as a sub teacher. I have been trying for 3 yrs. to get full time. I've gotten 3 certifications and am a prime worker. Only today I attempted to talk to the hiring AP aout a FT position that just became avaiable in my certified area. He said "I'll get with you tomorrow." I hope so, but this will be the 4th time I've tried for FT at this HS. Oh well.

    Wow...

That's quite the story... I'm 33 and moving to the Tampa area, I'm in finance, I've had a few interviews, but nothing has come out of them. I would imagine Tampa has more to offer than St. Lucie. Your post has certainly "spooked" me, but then again 33 is a bit different than 55, and I've sort of already committed. Well good luck to you, I too am thoroughly sick of winter...

"W" is really a facist Nazi too! How can you wonder why the country is swinging so conservatively? You are practically pushing mainstream folks that way. I can't believe the things coming out on your posts. I am not even close to being a Nazi, I would classify myself as a conservative independent with a passion for the environment. But to you I am Hitler? I would look again at where you are standing politically? ;)

Unless you are moving to Sanibel, Naples or Marco, I would rethink your move. If I am more than 500 yards from the beach I always think 'armpit' when I am in Florida.

Again, my take is that anyone to the right of you is calssified as a fascist. Big problem for you and your radical compadres. By the way I have voted for democrats for senator in both of the last elections for those offices. Does that make me a right-wing wacko?

I think "W" has dropped the ball on some issues, but when I hear idiots like your self running at the mouth and comparing him to Hitler, well it truthfully makes me rush to his defense. Do you know any thing about Hitler and Nazi Germany? Or have you been reading the propaganda on moveon.com for to long?

Isn't it interesting how the greatest volume of mud being slung around (pro-actively at that), by far, belongs to the "peaceful" left?

It always seems to be that way. The Free-thinkers society does not like posts that question there assumptions about the relationship with people and government, etc. I haven't been on here in about a week and this dsunman comes out of nowhere and starts blasting me.

Truthfully I think you are way beyond hope. You are still trying to figure out Why "W" is president, the Congress is Republican-controlled as is the supreme court.

Enlighten me, how is Bush anything like Hitler and how is abu garib anything like Dachau? Please enlighten me? I am waiting patiently?

Thanks, and I apologize for insulting you. Afraid you got in the crossfire.

I was forced to collect early retirement ('03) Soc Sec just to save our home. I also got a pension through the State (for two City jobs I did until '02). Soc Sec: $2200/mo incl wife + 2 kids (out of 3 I have, one too old). Pension: $780/mo.

But still no medical benefits, so wife was forced/lucky to get PT job at Costco that offers pro-rated benefits. I've taken PT jobs as US Census-taker, distributer of telephone books ($6.75/hr, min. wage in CA) and babysitter of a rec center (evenings/weekends, $7/hr) in the last 3 years.

New job: $1796/mo , classified as "laborer" for recycling program at CA university; pick up recyclables at U. buildings and take to recycling building. BUT I can keep all Soc Sec, pension thru state and make up to $12K before penalty kicks in; over $12K my salary is halved. So in my situation it really didn't "pay" to get a better job, anyway. AND: I get benefits (if they're not too much), so wife may be able to quit or cut back on her job.

Catch: my youngest son turns 18 in a year; then my Soc Sec is almost halved. Then it may be back to the drawing board.

BTW, in my last (City) job, I RAN the City's recycling program (Public Works Adm Asst.), and my new boss at the U is a Chinese kid whom I used to attend monthly meetings with 4 years ago. Great kid, though.

You're not in a good place (FL), as you note. I feel your pain, truly. If you're committed to hanging in there, keep reaching out, and good luck.
