How much electric distance are the Primes getting?

Actually, that was what I was doing for the first few weeks. Was trying chg mode to see if any difference in mpg. So far, it seems better to go to HV mode. Tried different scenarios for my commute, but running out EV then going to HV seems to be the best for me so far.

 

I've been able to increase my electric range to ~32 miles by reducing use of the heating system. Luckily it's not too cold in the Bay area... If anything, I turn in on for a little while and then turn it off. This has increased my range several miles. Thanks to these forums for that! I didn't realize the heating system used so much power... I have had to use the defrosters a couple of times but haven't noticed it going out of EV mode for that as others have reported.

 

That's what I suspected, because the car felt underpowered for a few minutes after I turned on the HV mode. Where did you find this info?

That display is disparaged in the Gen I plug-in subforum as a guess-o-meter whose main value is identifying Plug-In newbies . It is only an estimate by the system based on recent experience about what the range might be. The only real way to determine EV range is to drive in pure EV mode until charge is depleted and it forces you to HV mode.Then you know your EV range.

 

Instead of forcing it into HV mode to find the true EV range, couldn't you do the math with the estimated full EV range, subtract the actual miles used and get the difference. With the amount used versus the estimated full difference, use the ratio to compare the charge time it takes to charge the battery full from the amount used versus the amount it usually takes to totally recharge the battery from empty in HV mode to full. If the ratios are the same, based on your consistent driving habits and environment, you should be getting an accurate estimated full EV range without forcing the car into HV mode to car the same information.

You don't need to drive until automatic switch to HV if you don't want to and you have several short trips with charging opportunities. Just meter the actual total EV distance driven until only 1-2 miles on the estimate, add this estimate to your actual EV drive distance to get your EV range quite accurately.
I found that the estimate is being updated 'on the fly' and last 1-2 miles on the estimate took already your current trip type into account.

I managed 42 miles on EV, but that was over a mountain pass at 7200'. Coming down the mountain on electricity my range left went from 4 miles to 9, then on down to 0. I preemptively went into HV mode with about 5 mi of EV left at the beginning of the trip, then switched back to EV at the top of the mountain. Under normal driving conditions I am getting 25 - 30 miles while being careful how I use up the battery(ie: speed limit in the slow lane).

 

What part of the country are you, temp and range are related.

 

I have an unusual case due to favorable wind this past Wednesday. It was about my 5th charge from picking up the Prime from the dealer. When I left home with a full charge I had 26.1 mi of EV. Drove 4 miles on 2 short trips in town, but used less than 4 mi of EV on the display. Then I want to another town, late afternoon, directly east of me with a strong wind out of the west allowing the Prime to run in EV most of the time, as long as I kept the speed below 50 mph, even though I was in hybrid mode. Got to my eastern destination, I think I had about 44 mi on my trip meter since leaving with a full charge, and I know I got 93 mpg up to that point on the trip since unplugging from my garage that morning. I also had 21 mi of EV left at that point.

My appointment took 2 hours and the sun went down so the wind out of the west was significantly diminshed to almost zero. I drove back at about 40-45 mph sometimes in hybrid mode and then switched to EV mode to save on running the ICE as I got closer to home. I still had 3 mi of EV milege available when I got inside my garage. The days total distance was 88 miles and the gas consumed indicated 111.9 mpg. The EV ratio was 65%.

I'm pleasently surprised that even in 30 deg weather, the Prime after full charge has 25+ battery mines. At 40 Deg outside I got 27+. I love it.

I've been using Trip B and resetting it before going to work. I drive 3 miles at 72 mph, 9 miles at 57 mph and 3 miles at 30 mph. When I get there I add Trip B miles and the remaining Battery miles and it nearly equals the initial Battery Miles. Therefore, Battery miles seems pretty accurate to expected Drive miles.

 

Chances are that in summer you will be able to make those 30 miles return - EV (no A/C)

Very good. To save even more in close situations I glide in neutral whenever possible. Have been doing it for years with no problems.

 

The metric is not EV miles, it is miles per gallon, or gallons per mile if you like. If you compromise the overall mpge to increase EV miles, you are going the wrong way. I found that an OBD reader is indispensable in monitoring and interpreting energy use. The Prime is new enough that there isn't much data yet on the most efficient driving modes. Including mpge numbers in your posts will be a big help.
