How much electric distance are the Primes getting?

This is pretty typical of what one would expect with a Prius (plug-in or not). When the freeway is jammed, regeneration is helping you in the stop-and-go traffic. When you are going 75mph, the vastly increased air resistance is a pure loss.

 

I now have 20K on my Prime, and the answer to your question is that it depends on the external temperature. I live in the rainy Pacific Northwest, AND I drive with full headlights. That means in the worst case that I am using power for lights, AND the heat pump (for cabin heat and defrost) AND I suspect a third variable, which may be the efficiency of the lithium ion batteries. That said, my indicated battery-only range varies from 22 to 32 miles. The *actual* range achieved is typically 90% of indicated. We live in hilly but not extreme geography. Your 36ish mile goal does not look good. ;~) Hope this helps.

 

Got 33 miles in EV yesterday at 43 degrees F and was pretty happy about it. Never got within 3 of that last year in 50-80 degree temps. Maybe some kind of wear-in factor?

Yes, but in much colder temps I've achieved only 17 miles.

Also, about that 33 miles in EV -- it was on a route that I've done 75+ mpg in my Gen3 Prius over the same distance in the past, so there's that. And it didn't involve downhill stretches or backwinds or sneaking up on long haul trailers. Just normal suburban roads all between 30 and 50 miles per hour roadways with a ton of stoplights.

I've had my car for a little over 6 weeks, and 3,300 miles. I plug in every day when I get to work, and every night when I get home. My commute is 42 miles each way (on average, depending on if I take the 73 or not) and I am averaging 88 mpg overall.
Some days are better than others... it's so random. My best electric range was 29 (some regen, obviously) and, best trip home was from Carson to the Irvine area, the University Ave exit off the 405 south.. not bad, as I live off Crown Valley/5 exit. My best trip before that was to the 55. Heading to work in the morning, taking the 73, I can get almost to the Seal Beach exit before my full electric drops away.. I have in the past even gotten to the 19/Lakewood before, but with traffic, it was a weird fluke! I think with coasting, and minimal regen, I can easily go 25-27 miles... and often more.

 

Spring is finally here and decided to do some testing..first EV-range - urban and suburban driving..targeted 31 miles happy surprise ended in the range of 36 pure ev-miles..my personal record..on the way back used normal hybrid drive end drove bit faster roads achieved 78mpg..life is good

 

The EV can be extended any time the car gets down to 20 miles or so, varies according to conditions. Just put the car in charge mode, I try to use this mode daily, but frugally. My lifetime is 124mpg so I try to maintain that figure. Always use Brake on steep or continuous downhill portions but return drive on flats and uphill.

 

Hi yea I use charge mode quite often..but do you mean that you are in avarage 124 mpg? I drive longer distances regurlarly and that sort of increases avarage..I did have 4th gen regular Prius before PHV/Prime and I think this is bit more efficient in hybrid mode

 

As you see I have the Prime. That # directly in front of steering wheel is your current lifetime average. It goes higher with EV operation and lower with ICE Op. I only travel 22 miles to/ from = 44 miles. About 1000 feet of altitude to and from. I also traveled only at 55 MPHr. Just recently have I started driving at 65 mph with no big change. In your case perhaps keeping the charge between 10 and 20 may help.or run the EV dry and let the car have total control, but always in ev/eco. The car is quite smart.

I don't know if it's been practice at maximizing the range, or just breaking in the battery, but I just juuust eek out about 33 miles if I'm careful (maybe 80% highway).

 

wow, that's incredible! what highway speed is 'careful'?

 

Usually 65ish, but found it's all in the entering and exiting the highway. Battery hates accelerating, but loves long stretches. There are a few hills I can coast down to recoup some mileage.

I used to be Speedy McDemon on the highway in my old car so it took a lot of mental conditioning to be ok with people passing me while in the slow lane

 

During our two day stretch of spring warmth last week (80's) I was happy to see 33.7 and 34.8 as the listed range in the mornings! Real world EV ended up being 37.5 on the day I ran errands in addition to my usual 28.8 miles back and forth to work. I'm fortunate in that my work commute is all back roads so I can travel super efficiently and take advantage of rolling roads.

Early on I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised the EV range is ending up almost 10 miles higher then listed in warmer temps. Rather then wondering if I could make my 29 mile commute on all EV I now wonder just how much further I can go afterwards.

 

I start at 1000 feet elevation, drop to 200 feet, ascend to 500 feet and then drop back down to 300 feet on winding roads on my 12 mile commute. I make it home with about 2% left in the battery.

Note that the downhill triggers the ICE for compression breaking and it is on for about 2 minutes. Even so, I went about 300 miles on 1/16 of a tank.(rough guess).

The 200-1000 uphill(4 miles) draws down about 25% of the charge, but it draws basically nothing coming down.

 

i get around 24 to 26 miles depending on certain conditions
