How much discount did you get on your 2010 Prius?

I bought mine on Halloween and paid $1364 below MSRP. It took a lot of work to get that price though. ^_^

 

American Express's car purchasing program uses the same website/interface.

 

Interesting. So anyone know what the invoice price is for the II or III?

 

Both can be found on edmunds.

Offhand, I remember the invoice price of the III (including $750 destination charge) is $22,161.

It's not about how readily available the car you want is to the discount you get. I played dealers against dealers and knew the car I wanted I had to "order" and wait a few weeks/or month for...
ultimately, when dealers know you are talking to others and give them prices other dealers are giving you, someone is bound to go lower. that's how you get your deal!

 

Another factor for a discount is timing. You have to be lucky enough to be pricing from a given dealer shortly after they've received a shipment with not all the cars in it being accounted for. I think that's what allowed me to achieve a $1200 discount off MSRP.

 

I live in Southern California where Prius are in hot demand. I got mine for about $850 off MSRP, although the dealer tried to convince me that I really saved $2850 by not paying any premium.

 

Gee, assume ***any amount for dealer premium over MSRP*** and you saved $850 + that amount.

Just paid $1500 off MSRP in San Diego. Happy man!

What I didn't know before is that identical cars can have different base MSRP. IIIs were marked as $23,000 OR $23,400. No difference in vehicles at all. Sealer said it depended on when it was manufactured (shipped?).

That $400 difference was from the mid-model-year across the board price increase that went into effect on/after Oct 18th.

This was my experience also. Bought my Prius V-ATP on 10/31-11/1 for $300 over invoice using the following strategy:

1. Autobuyer program through Costco gave me a "preferred" price & pointed me to the internet managers at the 5 Toyota dealerships in my area.

2. Priced what I wanted on Vehix.com and got the "price people are paying" figures so I knew what to ask for and if the dealer prices were good or not. Know your price before going to the dealership.

3. Stayed firm against the dealer's best offers which brought the price lower. "Thank you for coming down another $300 but I can't go higher than xx,xxx." Create an imaginary friend (husband/wife/on-line pricing/other dealer, etc.), anything, to play off the prices offered by the dealer.

4. Bought at the end of the month so dealership incentivized to make quota.

5. Be knowledgeable: arm yourself with research so you know a good deal, know when to stop & sign...or walk away. (Is that Kenny Roger's singing in the background?) The dealer will come down if they are motivated to make the sale.

 

Only problem is that deals on the Prius are not offered thru all Costco locations. Great deal though.

Each time I go to Overstock.com, I get a statement that there is no Overstock.com price on the Prius. Is this because of my location (Ark. in GST) or because whether it's listed there varies from moment to moment, or maybe I just don't get no respect?

Also, when posting to this thread, please list the trim level (II-V) and major options you get. A number of dealers have said to me that the discounts are greater at the higher levels, as more profit is built into the GST.

 

No discount. Our salesperson told us there was no negotiating on the price because the Prius is popular and Toyota has slowed production so as not to exceed demand during the recession. The price was still only $2K more than a 2009 certified used Prius we were considering. Maybe we could have done a little better if we'd shopped other dealers, but we wanted to buy from the local dealer if possible. He also gave me the trade-in on my old vehicle that I asked for.
