fair enough, as irrelevant maybe as your question as to how I feel about pollution, no?

I'm an incredibly conscious and aware steward of my environment, a Prius owner, and I'm posting on a Prius forum for gosh sakes ...

you think I advocate pollution, irresponsible environmental stewardship, and reckless exploitation?

let me ask you a question though ...

do you urinate and defecate into our water supply?

if you do, then don't throw stones, as i have a bag of my 'em myself.

What, you're trying to stay on task and ask a sane question? ;) I tried pointing out earlier that this thread would be better as a poll. Instead there's an endless loop of debates.

You're right, that IS an easy one! I can even name the result of it! It's called [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dust_Bowl"]The Dust Bowl[/ame].

How is that a fail? Lack of top soil and water is the common evidence for the dust bowl. How did it happen in your estimation?

There is a fine list here:

[ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_extinct_animals_of_North_America]List of extinct animals of North America - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

List of extinct plants - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Then there is most recent extinction event, moderates.

But those signatures could be due to bacteria and not plant or animal life, could they not?

Easter Island trees. Every single one of them was cut down. I don't think Easter Islanders thought they would ever run out, hey, they never ran out before.

got it ... so your claim is we're out of topsoil, there is no more?

ok, so we're out of trees

    right.

    Anybody else?

If you were an Easter Islander you would be. I guess when we run out of a natural resource on Earth you will be claiming it's OK, there is plenty of that on Mars.

Nobody said that the Dust Bowl was caused by every inch of topsoil on the planet disappearing. But I would love to hear your theory about why the Dust Bowl happened, if not total mismanagement of natural resources.

just admit you can't do it and let it go

    .

Try to walk in a straight line brother ...

we're not out of top soil.

The world has plenty of top soil, and despite pat's lamentations, there are plenty of trees as well.

I don't really feel like debating the Dust Bowl with you. Your citation of the Dust Bowl doesn't serve the point for which you asserted it.

That doesn't mean I claim the Dust Bowl didn't happen, neither does it mean I'm a Dust Bowl denier ... I'm not.

You claimed that naming a natural resource depleted to exhaustion was easy, and cited the Dust Bowl ...

we survived the Dust Bowl, and well, top soil must be a renewable resource.

I'm done with the Dust Bowl. Top soil was never depleted to exhaustion.

You want to talk more about it, start a Dust Bowl thread.

What would be really impressive tho StevO, is if instead of harping on the Dust Bowl, you simply posted an admission that naming a resource depleted to exhaustion isn't so easy, and that you did not and can not do it.

I never said all the topsoil on the planet went away.

Here's an experiment: Put a plastic bag over your head and tie it really tightly. Will all the oxygen on the planet immediately cease to be? Of course not.

Since there's still oxygen on the planet, you should still, by your (for lack of a better word) "logic" still be able to breath.

Try it and come back and report your results.

Top soil was depleted to exhaustion at that point in time and place. It would take years for farmers to be able to renew the topsoil and bring in water. I don't think the 2.5 million displaced people, nor the up to 7,000 people that died during the dust bowl would be comforted in knowing that later on, top soil would return (through man made means as well as climate change). The local people still lost their houses, land, and in some cases, lives.
