actually makes it a lot messier if you are trying to figure out your tank MPG

According to fuelly.com and my 27 fuel-ups, I average 7.95 gallons each time. I always stop fueling when the nozzle clicks off, because 1) I don't want to overflow and get gas splashed on me or the car, and 2) I want to be consistent with fuel ups so that fuelly can better estimate my stats.

I average 502 miles between those 27 fuel-ups. I'd really like to average around 9 gallons, so that I can go another 2 days between fuel ups. But the darned blinking last pip starts to stress me out and I stop at the gas station. Only to get frustrated that in theory I have about 3 gallons left!

For some reason, the PiP has a smaller 10.6 gallon gas tank. The usually fill 8 gallons like everyone else. I stretched it to 9 a couple of times.

Consistently 8.4 - 8.6 gallons per fillup. I always fill up at the last blinking bar and often when "miles remaining" = zero. Since my daily commute is around 20 - 22 miles round trip, I never really worry about running empty since my PiP EV range will always take me at least "there" in the morning - hence the risky-appearing willingness to draw down past "zero miles remaining". Now if I could only charge at work...

However, on interstate trips it's a different story (of course). Once early on I did push it past the point of idiocy, in West Virginia past midnight, smokin' down I-79 trying to drive (tired) as far as I could without stopping, and of course the GPS gas station I planned to refuel at right off some exit was closed for the night by the time I got there. I creeped all around that corner of W VA on minimal pulse-&-glide power until I found an open gas station in some valley. By that point, my odometer showed I had gone 19 miles on "zero miles left".

BTW - this got me into the habit of saving my EV miles during interstate trips just in case I get myself into a stooopid decision jam again. Those EV miles = another 12+ emergency gas-free miles when in unknown territory.

Not really. The nozzles don't click off at the same time every time, so there could be a little more or a little less gas poured in on a fill.

Agree...the first click method isn't perfect. But it's MUCH more precise than going up to the nearest dollar.

It's really not that critical to me. I judge by how much I'm not spending, plus I get free fill-ups at work. ;)

so blinking PiP means how many miles left in your estimation ?

I've only filled once so I forget - I'm down to one non-blinking PiP and it says 30 gas miles left.
Last time I ended up filling too soon but was at 5 mos and wanted to be safe... ended up taking 8 gallons

very anal I guess but I'd like to wait as I'm approaching 9,000 miles

If you have a ratio screen just for this tank then you can wait until it says you've used 9 gallons.

unfortunately I hit reset for this tank awhile back, which is why I was wondering about that blinking PiP

I'll make it to 9,000 in a day or so and take that 2nd fill-up. Says 30miles to go but I'm betting 2 gallons

You can safely go another 50 miles at the minimum after DTE says 0.

It's a convenient 40 litres for those of us who use them...

If I'm on my usual commute, and trying (so far unsuccessfully) to hit that 1000 mile tank, Fuelly confirms I normally fill at about 37.5 litres, so a smidgen under 10 gals US. That is when I'm well into a blinking pip, and only a few miles left on range. Never dared to get down to zero yet. If I'm on a less familiar and longer journey, then soon after the last pip blinks.

I know others say there are 50 miles from zero, my figures suggest it will be less than that for me. But in any case, mpg varies so much on conditions, that strikes me as a dangerous figure to work to.

Thanks and I was being a dummy - I have the lifetime screen to work off so 16 - 8 on my only fill-up = 8 current.

So weird the PiP can't give better numbers... I'm at 30 miles and 1 non-blinking pip left but 2.6 gallons ?
Heading into Boston and back this weekend and not taking a chance in this cold - fill-up #2 coming

    PiP fooled me again.
I just filled up for the 2nd time this year (bought in March). Got the flashing pip and read was 15 miles left.
It only took 8.35 gallons !! 2 clicks so I wasn't going to force any further... next time I'll do better

    this tank : 4683miles 8.35gallons = 561 mpg
    so lifetime : 9013miles 16.35 gallons = 551 mpg
