I was in downtown SF this week and saw a couple of Red Gen 4s but generally saw zillions of Gen 3s as taxis 1472861802022.jpg

That's because you're not down here in the "big city", Michelle. ;) You're up there in all that clean air!

The "Yellow Cab" company is about 99% Prius. They are all over the place. Mostly Gen3's, and Prius v wagons. (But I still can't figure out how people, and all their luggage, can fit in the back of a Prius!)

As i was told there was a waiting list for August delivery, i was expecting a load of Priuses to suddenly appear. If anything, i've seen fewer this last month.

The other night, a Gen 4 almost took the front end off of my car because the driver blew through a yield sign.

What a loser! On the rural roads I drive the biggest problem is morons speeding round blind corners either on or over the centre line. Good job I like to drive cautiously, as if I copied their style I'd have been in many head on collisions by now. Or probably just one fatal one early on!

Puts me in mind of Hana Hwy on Maui. We were semi run off the road by an oncoming cop, luckily the shoulder was grassy and not a steep bank. A second similar near miss was a flat bed truck transporting a vehicle.

Guy from Toyota told me that compared to 5 years ago they sell in Europe 6 times less Priuses... because the hsd hybrid drivetrain is available in many other very very popular models now like Yards Auris etc.

We originally went in to look at the Yaris hybrid....does that mean these other Toyota Hybrids are unavailable in the US? The missus looked at the hybrid Rav4, but there are years left in our old diesel CR-V.
I heard the new Prius hybrid drive train is superior to the older hybrid system in the other models though.

There are and they're catered specifically to the market. For example in Europe, you have the Yaris, Auris and Prius to cater to the B, C and D segment. Based on what some of our European members have said, the Auris appears to be the sweet spot in terms of price, kit and size. That and we're told the Prius is expensive in Europe.

Over here, because we like larger cars, we do have the Prius c (to cover the small end and it's a half-size bigger than the Yaris) and we have 3 to cover the midsize (D) segment - Prius, Camry and Prius v (5-seater). The Prius is aggressively priced and at least in Canada, it's several thousands of dollars less than a similarly equipped Camry Hybrid (but of course the Camry Hybrid is much larger and it's a saloon for those who prefer an enclosed boot space). The US has the Avalon Hybrid too which is larger than the Camry.

In Canada, the Camry Hybrid is the best selling Toyota hybrid (and probably best selling hybrid) but I suspect with the introduction of the RAV4 Hybrid, it might supersede that as the gasoline RAV4 is very popular here (along with the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Subaru Forester).

In my opinion, it is superior. I test drove a 2016 RAV4 hybrid and the 2016 Prius 4 LB, back-to-back. The RAV4 felt clunky (both the drivetrain, and overall), and it's HSD was nowhere near as seamless as the HSD in the Gen 4 Prius. The RAV4 had a quite noticeable transition between EV and ICE, it's throttle response was not sharp, and in general it was rough around the edges. The Gen 4 was clearly and obviously superior, IMO.

    Edit: typo

I say saloon too - do you prefer sedan..?! We never even test drove the Yaris after falling for the Prius, and the promised Honda Jazz (Fit) hybrid test drive never materialised either. I'm so happy with the CVT and slick hybrid drive train in the Prius, i dont fancy settling for anything not as great.

My glamorous assistant helps me visualise the new look....! 20160905_131039.jpg

I'm just about to switch from the Yaris Hybrid to the Prius (38 days), I've been really happy with it. The thing though with the hybrid versions of the Yaris, Auris and RAV4 is that they are compromised as they were originally built as straight petrol cars. The Prius has a pedigree as a hybrid with all development learnt from each generation being put to good use.

I've found because of this there is a significant difference in how the Yaris / Auris drive compared to the Prius. The Prius also has significantly better MPG and much lower CO2 when you compare them.

Yeah, as an ex diesel fanatic, i used to compare hybrid and diesel economy figures to generally find diesels providing the best mpg.
I was a bit blind though, as i would be happy to see diesel supermini economy beat bigger hybrids - only the Mk1 Insight seemed to have stellar economy (but was only a 2 seater).
The new Prius is the first large hybrid i've seen that will beat diesel supermini economy (excluding plug-ins).
The hybrid system is way more fun to use than a diesel for chasing better fuel economy.
