How long does the ICE water pump's generally last?

    OP: No good answer for you, but I think most pumps fail sometime after 100k miles.
    If you combine coolant exchange and belt at the same time the $ and time cost is pretty agreeable.

    I'm not sure in what sense you mean recycled, but Ethylene Glycol degrades in about 10 days. If you are on a septic tank then dilute with running water to avoid harming the tank's bacteria ecology. And PLEASE rinse the sink very well after use.

    I replaced Ema's heat storage coolant pump and inverter coolant pump at around 190,000 miles. I forgot to do the engine water pump at the same time and you guessed it ... it failed around 204,000 miles. I was stuck limping to the dealer watching the old scangauge and water temp and had it replaced.

    I currently have all 3 of those pumps sitting in my garage and plan to have Toyota change all 3 along with all new coolant when Ema goes in at roughly 390,000 miles. So, I got 200,000 miles out of mine but probably am one of the lucky ones. I would say 150,000 or sooner if you want to be safe.

    Hi Chris,

    Does this mean that the engine coolant pump failed catastrophically, where the bearing just gave way and fluid gushed out? Normally I would have expected the pump to give you some warning, such as substantial seepage past the bearing or the bearing becoming noisy.

    Regarding the OP's query, I changed the engine coolant pump on my 2004 at 159K miles but the original pump was still in good condition, with the tiniest amount of weeping from the bearing weep hole.

    It wasn't catastrophic as in I did not loose all the fluid but there was substantial seepage. I can only assume that whoever changed the other 2 pumps didn't see any seepage and it failed in roughly 15,000 miles but could be wrong on that. I think I was overheating from air pockets and low coolant level, the pump itself may not have failed. To be honest I didn't look that close and was mad at myself for missing the water pump when I did the other 2. Replacing the SLLC when I did the other 2 pumps may have knocked loose some debris that caused the pump to fail? Just a theory there.

    The water pump failure has been Ema's only part "failure" unless you count the catalytic converter. They are only good for so long anyway though and 390,000 miles is a lot even without "The Burn".

    Replaced ours at 75k miles, 46 months after purchasing car. There was some slight and noticeable leakage. A fine mist sprayed white droplets on hood insulation right above water pump area.
