I don't know how the disk thing works but each Nav system has its own unique id code and when you download an update it asks for the unique update code provided with the update file.

Legally, I would think so, because you're not making a profit off of it (i.e. selling a copy)

We're talking about different systems, though.

The European system seems to take downloaded updates, whereas the US systems in the Gen 4 take SD cards that expect certain information in the CID structure to deter piracy. (Older systems took a map DVD instead.)

The SD card is $170 and my dealer wants $130 to install it. I spoke with Toyota USA and that is the cost of the card and it is not covered even under the "platinum" service plan. I don't know what it takes to find where the SD slot is or how to get to it, but would be willing to to it myself. Interestingly, GPS data for IFR aviation systems, which are updated every 28 days, costs less. Toyota says it is because of what their supplier charges, which means they are being grossly overcharged, although since it is a pass through, they don't seem to care.

Again, does anyone know where the SD slot is and how hard it is to get to it?

Never mind about where the slot is, I found it in the nav manual (not owner's manual). It is apparently in the right lower corner below the screen behind a cover. Car isn't here now, but will check it later. $130 to pop a cover and replace an SD card ??????

The busy, cartoonish look of the maps and the touchscreen user experience are utter garbage. No way I throw good money after bad to update it. Between my old Garmin and Google Maps I'll muddle through somehow. Toyota is insane.

The microsd card can be changed in less than 5 seconds, it is at the lower right corner. 86271-0E071 is the part number for the current SD card. They increment the last digit every single year. All North American Toyotas that take microsd cards all use the same ones, all the way back to some units from 2012.

I purchased a 2018 map SD card off eBay for $30 and replaced it in 1 minute. You take the old one out and put the new one in. When you first turn the car on you get an "updating" screen. The SD card must remain in the slot at all times, you take it out you lose the map.

These cards actually use the Secure component of "Secure Digital"(sd) cards. This means that they cannot be copied. If you take the files off of one and put on to any other SD card, even a prior year Toyota card it will not work. The SD card includes a secure UUID that's different for every SD card, and it encrypts the contents against it. You can take the card out and read it in PC, but all files are encrypted. If you try to copy and put into your head unit it won't be able to read it because the secure ID will be different from what was used to encrypt the data.

Never buy these from the dealer, always from eBay. Rav4/avalon/lexus/prius/camry they all use the exact same card, just go by part number on the listing.

These two statements seem to be at odds with each other. How do they end up on eBay if they can't be copied? May we assume that somebody is pirating them to sell them on eBay? Because Toyota sure as hell isn't behind that! Thanks.

People are selling the actual SD cards, the real Toyota ones. I know I sold my 2017 when I bought a 2018. I know I'll be selling my 2018 since I just bought an aftermarket unit. Totaled cars and the like, sometimes stuff like dealership loaner cars, etc.

They assuredly 100% can not be copied.

OK, so we'd be buying an older map database which kind of defeats the purpose of "updating" to a newer map, no?

I mean, if you want to take that new shortcut road that they just put in 6 months ago, the map won't know about it.

No, you can get the absolute latest SD card. The part number is the part number, if its the part number for the latest card it's the latest card. You can buy prior years if you want, they just go for less money. A 2017 is useful to someone with a 2012 who just wants specific roads around them updated.

Micro Sd Card - Toyota (86271-0E071) | Toyota Parts

You can see each SD card that the latest one replaces. Those are the ones from the previous years. If you see an sd card, just google the part number and these Toyota part websites will tell you if that part number was replaced with a newer one or is the latest one.

Typically the maps don't "know" about small changes like that for a couple of years.
Major changes, maybe a little sooner.

Much belated comment: So the dealer charges you the "list price" for the updated map but does not give you the USB dongle that houses the map -- and then charges you an "installation fee" on top of that?
