My dog trainer also had cats and used the invisible fencing in her home to keep the animals off the counters.

Our cat is smart enough to never let us see that she's been on the kitchen counters, at all.
She does get up on the bathroom counter, which is the exact same height - usually when I'm scooping the litter box, or opening the window, or whatever, so I know it's an easy jump for her.

We pretend she's never done the kitchen counters, and she pretends to never do them. Works for us.

If you combined this with Tom's fence charger, it would probably be really effective and fun to watch.

    Easiest way: A good whack...

Seriously, it works on kids, it works on cats. When the cats were kittens, if they ever jumped on the counters they got smacked HARD. After a few (maybe less than 30 each) attemps and bad whacks, they stop. They dont go on the counter anymore. You need to hurt the cat mildly to make it know not to do it anymore.

Just like kids, if you threaten but never punish, they never learn. Whack them with a belt and they damn well wont do it again.

    It's actually very simple.
Cover your kitchen counter with Aluminum Foil.
Your cat will richochet (sp-?) off the counter as he is about to land.
I put it on my dining room chairs, my cata have stayed away.
    They absolutely hate Aluminum Foil.

Everything a cat can reach belongs to the cat. Once you understand that, everything else is simple. You just don't leave anything you don't want the cat to have anywhere the cat can get at it. In the case of pizza, close the box before you turn your back.

My last one was just about big enough for that. Fortunately he was very friendly and well behaved.

All cats are cute when little and still cute when big; and all cats are trouble... but they're worth it.

There's a story from either Eva Luna or Cuentos de Eva Luna (Stories of Eva Luna) both by Isabel Allende, about a cat trainer in a circus. It was a very poor circus and they could not afford a lion, so the cat trainer used house cats. But in time the circus became successful and was finally able to afford a lion. And it ate the cat trainer. He should have stuck with house cats.

There's another story (I forget the author) about Christian martyrs. This one kid martyr was terrified of the thought of being trampled by elephants, so when he ended up being put in the arena with lions he was so happy he ran right up to the lion and was dispatched quickly. Those that hung back were eaten last, when the lions weren't hungry any more, and so killed them much more slowly. I think the moral of that story is either burn the incense or be first in line at the lions' buffet.
