Horn Upgrade --- DIY

Thanks for the write up. So you didn't need to wire in a relay?

I put a Stebel horn on my 2010 BMW R1200GS motorcycle last year. At 135db it gets your attention! So I've been considering doing this for the Prius also but would prefer the big Caddy sound to the Stebel's more euro sound.

 

I replaced mine last weekend after someone was changing into my line while I laid down on the horn. They didn't hear a thing, and neither did my wife who was in the passenger seat!

So far, I'm happy with the cheap and easy upgrade! :rockon:

 

Interesting read. Just wondering if anyone that did this mod had the radar cruise/Pre-crash system module up front behind the badge?

What I did not see is where the grounding wires were attached?

No problems at all with the dynamic cruise control.

Have you ever tried spraying some silicon on the male and female end before putting it together, this along with a good wrap of 3M electrical tape should keep it dry.

Another alternative is to use shrink wrap tubing and a heat gun.

 

That works good too. The only problem I had with that is there is sometimes some exposed sections on the connections.

I used to start at the relay and keep wrapping the tape until I got to the bundle of wires. about 2 inches below the bottom of the relay.

It all depends on where the relay is mounted or placed.

It seems like every time a relay and connectors needed to be replaced, the wires would end up being too short after cutting the bad stuff off.

LOL..........never a problem if the relay is inside the car.

 

Great job! The small horns bother me when I switched from a medium sized sedan. It's hard to be heard by these big trucks.

 

Thanks EVPV, the instructions were great. After almost being backed into by a lady backing out in a parking lot as I was waiting for a pedestrian. I decided I needed a real horn. What a difference!

So i just completed this DIY and i must say that I am a very avid DIYer and have worked on many many vehicles in the past. This is by far the MOST difficult project I have ever done. I just completed and i literally had to pull the upper part of the bumper back to get in to the existing horn bolts. Unless you have incredibly small hands, this will tear your arms up. Mine look like i just got into a fight with a thorn bush.

 

I also did this mod & thought the instructions were excellent & straight forward.

 

yes ,couldn't have even attempted the project without this forum and post ,was just much more difficult than anticipated with my large hands lol

 

Haha, totally understand what your sayin as this is one of the few times I can say my smaller hands were an advantage over your bigger hands.
