Honda Brings Back the Insight to fight the Prius

I think what they are saying is the new vehicle will be capable of "stealth driving", which I infer from other posts is not possible in the HCH. If so, that -would- be an improvement.

 

not what I heard. This car is supposed to be slightly bigger than the fit, still get the 1.3l IMA with 60 mpg. The next gen prius I've heard was supposed to get a ~10% boost in FE, putting it around 50-55 mpg.

 

well the car looks pretty much prius sized. looks good.

 

a 1.3 IMA thats getting 60mpg wil not get the same in a larger new car like this on.

 

i like it. would be nice if GM brought back the EV that had all the controversy

 

i think this car will sell very well considering its unique design.

 

Will they team with Lotus to produce an audible warning for the car to avoid slaughtering the blind and young children?

Thank God! Toyota should be placed on notice that more than one competent car manufacturer will be fighting for our hybrid business. This appears to be an attractive green car worthy of our attention and Honda is a great auto manufacturer. I look forward to being able to choose between two great products in the future. For all the Prius fanatics that view this as betrayal maybe Honda will give the customers a better set of tires that provide durability, fuel efficiency, safety, traction, etc.. Competition never hurts between quality companies.

 

Don't forget the old Insight's numbers were the old EPA calc, and usually for the MT with lean burn and T2B9 emissions. The CVT version without the lean burn mode getting it down to T2B5 emissions is only rated 47mpg comb. on the 2008 EPA formula. 47mpg is no slouch, but I think they will be doing very well just to maintain this in the new larger vehicle if its still a mild hybrid. Don't forget the Fit is almost as big as the Prius in terms of interior (pass + cargo) volume (Fit = 111cuft, Prius = 112 cuft). They're both a lot bigger than the old Insight was (63.7 cuft).

Definitely looks like a Prius / VW lovechild. Not necessarily a bad thing though. It looks to me like Honda has decided to concede the top MPG position to Toyota, and try to be almost as good but at a better price. Only time will tell if that's the right strategy.

maybe so, but the fit is ~350 lbs lighter than the prius. I dont know what this new hybrid will be, but I've read it will be rated at 60 mpg....they maybe rumors, maybe not.

 

Even with 1.3L improved Civic IMA, the city MPG will be lower than Prius. It will then have to make up on the highway to match Prius' combined MPG. It would be very interesting to see more spec and how much it is going to cost.

 

If the new Insight doesn't blow the Prius out of the water (lower MSRP, lower emissions, better MPG (city & highway) etc. Honda should hang their head in shame ...

 

I think the car Danny posted minus the front grille works looks pretty familiar. I like the red one and have to admit Honda builds good vehicles.

Agree with US auto makers not doing much, too bad for production workers.
They need to get off the pot and soon!

 

I agree that competition is a good thing. But I wouldn't hold my breath on the tires, not if they're cutting corners to bring it in at a lower price than a base Prius. I've seen posts on here talking about 25K miles from their dealer tires, and some talking about 80K miles. The LRR is a major part of the mileage benefits, but perhaps for some a traction, cornering, safety issue. I've read that both Ford and GM plan to put them on their 2010 models to bump up their EPA figures. Frankly I haven't had any problems, but that probably arises from the fact that my Prius outperforms my Blazer hands down on cornering. Maybe not on traction but around here the 4 inch clearance is what will keep the Prius home this winter since Denver doesn't believe in snow plows on side streets.
