Mega casting is a relatively new thing. Even if we had presumed all the old ones were Mega casting .... where is your link to indicate that they are more quickly destroyed as opposed to glued / riveted technology. Or is it just such a negative outlook is your hope.

History has many examples of new technology having issues of long term viability, including early innovative technology as the 1930's Chrysler Airflow and the De Havilland Comet.

My dad was involved with IBM personal computers in the 1990's. Windows 95 took hours to install and frequently crashed.

Just this past weekend, my Chromebook died. I expected that it would take several hours to restore. I powered up a new Chromebook, entered my email address for Google and it was restored to all my configuration from the cloud in 15 minutes. The micro SD card was removed from the dead Chromebook and placed into the slot of the new one.

For the internet, I will use a Chromebook. I have separate laptops for my old Microsoft Windows applications.

EV's and Tesla technology is still in its infancy.

Don't blame dad ... he probably had a crappy 386. If he'd had a faster processor (2 GHz) & more than 400mb memory ? loading it up off a scuzzy in stead of a 5x cd? it'd take less than 15 minutes. Been there done that.

Toyota and Tesla can learn from the aircraft industry on light metal air frame structure designs on stress risers and repair techniques.

It's called the "It didn't come from here culture."

A lot can be learned from the archives of Zeppelin AG, Alcoa, NACA (the predecessor to NASA, the FAA reports and recommendations, and the accident investigation reports of the NTSB.

It's the highest level of learning explained in Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives known as transfer of learning.

Funny you wouldn't realize or have read already - but when Tesla was ramping up the model S design - many NASA Engineers were pissed at tesla because they were poaching so many of their Engineers from Aerospace & NASA. But I'm sure they'd appreciate the advise - had it not been implemented roughly a decade ago

As a Windows NT alfa test site I recall loading the first version that came on something like 35 3.5" diskettes. I think it took me something like a day and a half to first load shuttling between normal tasks and feeding the next disk. OTOH, I led the group that had to choose between a Windows or Apple future in a multi hundred person company spread throughout the world. We quickly agreed on Office which would run on both but choose W95/NT as the better business platform. This back when all were in their infancy.

As a pretty intensive Windows user, I can't recall the time I last had the blue screen type of crash. It seems better than my electrical service in its reliability. High praise from someone who used to maintain Operating Systems for large government organizations.

It was also a time when Shuttle was shutting down and both space and aviation were on a technological plateau. If you wanted to make parts, not paper, Tesla was hiring.

Tesla wins with invaluable real world long term evaluative testing that can't be done in house or any proving ground.

Structure and suspension components are not totally proven on their cars.

Seems like whenever you look at Hertz rental pricing it's invariably the top or near the top of costs. Who are these people keeping them in business anyhow. It seems even finding regular hybrids to rent from Hertz is often a stretch - unless way more money is shelled out compared to the gas you would otherwise be saving.

I rented a car from Hertz at LAX this morning. More than 3/4 of the "gold" lot was EVs. I'd love to try one, but I don't get to reserve overnight charging at the hotel we are staying in, so that is out.

I'm not even up against long distances. But there isn't any time in the schedule for charging, so it would have to happen at night. I know I could do that at some hotels, but for the moment it's too rare & random to really work with.

Hampton Inn seems well populated with L2 chargers for overnight. As for the others, I use ChargePoint to find them and check the comments to make sure they have recently been used.
