You save time. You can do it in 20 minutes. You spend more time at the dealer than that.

Interesting. My PiP is a 2013 and has a flat dipstick.

The sun doesn't rise and set on Mobil.

It usually takes me at least an hour to DIY, but I'm doing stuff like taking the full engine underpanel off, start the drain and let it drip, check the CV boots. No point in rushing.

Maybe they saw you are over 100k and fill more so when you burn oil you don't run too low.

That's entirely possible. I'm the second owner.

The listing on parts.toyota.com gives a second part number for the oil level gauge sub-assembly, 15301-37030, which applied only to 2012–2014 models and has been superseded by 15301-37010, the current part number for all Prius models from 2010 through 2018.

Google Image Search found a picture someone posted of a new gauge in a bag labeled 15301-37030. It does have some extra bends near the end, so the change in part numbers would seem to account for the difference from the 15301-37010 (example for sale on eBay).

I have no idea why Toyota changed the design, though.

Да, разумеется. There are Toyota cars in Russia, and the same part was used on the Prius and the Corolla for several years. If you scroll through the photos, you’ll see one of a bag with a Toyota label for part number 15301-37030, containing a dipstick with bends like those also seen in the photos of post #15.

Wrong dipstick seems pretty unlikely, but it sure would explain the oil being so high on the dipstick.

Mine is 20-1/4" exactly from the full mark to the base of the handle where it hits the top of the tube. How does yours compare, @Bgustafson?

My daughter's Corolla has a dipstick like that - it bends at the bottom of the tube to enter the sump. +1 wondering if this is the right length for your car (it is a different engine, obviously).

Once when a dealer did an oil change on my old Subaru Forester they returned the car with a shorter dipstick in it- don't know if it was from a WRX or Impreza. I took it back (they initially thought I was crazy until the manager found mine on the tech's bench). I think they were using that to do a controlled overfill of a quart high since they were (and still are) having serious oil burning issues on some engines. The only reason I knew was because mine had a T handle and the one they forgot to keep had a ring for a finger pull. (y)

To read oil level correctly, i use to do another trick. Try apply slight twist moment while inserting and pulling stick into tube. And do it quick enough, to prevent oil spread.

    Good luck to everybody.

It's the correct dipstick. I have the same one in my '13 V wagon. I assume the bends are to put some distance between the dipstick and the tube when being extracted -- but that's just a guess.

It is interesting that among 3 2013 cars (@Bgustafson, @jerrymildred and mine) two have the "kinky" dipstick and one has a flat.

My wife's 2007 has a little 90° twist at the bottom end. I assume that's also to keep the flat surfaces farther from the tube walls, but I'm not so sure that it does much good.

@jerrymildred posted the measurement of his, the flat style, in post #32. If @Bgustafson measures his for comparison, this question will be cleared up. I'm guessing they're the same.
