I guess we'll find out when one of us actually get the check. :)

That would have been me- they promised a 60 day turn around but I think my "source" was thinking more like 30 days.... so still waiting like the rest of you. Submitted March 5th...

So the person you met who claimed to write the checks worked for CCSE, rather than the state?

He could have meant that he "processed" for the checks...?? Even I am confused about who actually writes the checks.....the State of California who is very slow or the CSE....

It's not considered income but a price adjustment to figure the basis of your car.

You would use this basis to figure a gain or loss if you sell the car or calculate the depreciation if you use it for business.

Per CVRP they don't 1099 the rebate.

Not sure if the state does but CVRP's words were "We do not provide a 1099 form, but it's best to speak with your tax advisor
    about the rebate."

At least they were quick to approve my application once I mailed it in. Should have a check within 60 days.

With $1500 state and $2500 federal rebate/tax credit I feel a little better about the transaction price of the car :).

The state is pretty clear that sales tax is due on the pre-rebate price. Like for ordinary mail-in type rebates, sales tax is due on the pre-rebate price, but the rebate is not considered income.

But I am not a tax professional, so this information is worth what you paid for it. :)

That seals that it is not taxable. By federal law they would need to provide a 1099 if the amount was over $600 and was taxable.

    It's not taxable income -

checked with my tax advisor. they can't 1099 you without a SS or TIN.

They said that once you're approved, the money is reserved for you, so don't fret if you're approved and waiting when the money runs out on their website. As for the rebate, note also that if you sell the car within 36 months of purchase, you need to return the $1500. There were some other provisions of the rebate too...

I picked up my PiP from Dianne at Carson Toyota on Saturday, applied for the rebate on Monday, hand delivered my documentation to the California Center for Sustainable Energy office in San Diego Tuesday morning (the office isn't too far from my home), and received an "approved" email by the time I got home. I believe Amy is the person who is processing my paperwork, but she wasn't available when I dropped by the CCSE office, so Kevin went over my documentation to make sure I didn't forget anything. The instructions for the entire process have been pretty clear all along, and I didn't run into any glitches. I gave them a copy of the front and back of the temporary registration the dealer had affixed to the windshield, and Kevin made sure my name and address were legible on the registration copy. Everyone in the CCSE office was very helpful, and I was in and out in 15 minutes or less.

It can take up to 60 days to receive the rebate check, according to the email I received. Kevin says the checks come from their office rather than from the State, and the timing depends on the office's accounting cycle.

I got my confirmation from Amy Willis at CVRP back on March 9th, but still have not received yet. Will report back once I get that much awaited check in the mail. It's actually only been a month, so might be 30 more days for me.

They told me that they issue checks according to their accounting cycle, so it depends when check-issuing time rolls around.

I already posted that earlier . . . no, neither the state, nor the Feds hold it to be taxable income.

One more cool deal that CSEC does - they put on seminars showing how to fill out the various forms ... not just for the CA rebate ... but they'll walk you through the process for PV solar rebates. Now that many more PiP's are coming on line, folks may want to consider getting their juice on the cheep ... or free. By using our solar (that we installed in '09) power for both home power AND transportation, it will pay for itself by the end of 2014. So if you're thinking of upgrading to PV, give them a shout out.
