I think (but am not sure) that tax credit for EVSE charging equipment is 30% of the cost of the equipment and its installation up to a maximum credit of $1,000:

"Fueling equipment for natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (propane), liquefied hydrogen, electricity, E85, or diesel fuel blends containing a minimum of 20% biodiesel installed between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2017, is eligible for a tax credit of 30% of the cost, not to exceed $30,000. Permitting and inspection fees are not included in covered expenses. Fueling station owners who install qualified equipment at multiple sites are allowed to use the credit towards each location. Consumers who purchased qualified residential fueling equipment prior to December 31, 2017, may receive a tax credit of up to $1,000."

I think this to means that, if a consumer spends $3,333, the tax credit is $1000. (30% x $3333 = $1000). Spend less than $3,333, the tax credit is reduced proportionately. Spend more than $3,333 and the credit is still capped at $1,000.

There are also some favorable incentives for owners of multi-family and commercial properties. I think that these are also retroactive to 2017 so, unfortunately, they're not particularly useful when asking your landlord to install new equipment. However, if I were in a condominium association which installed EVSE stations in 2017, I'd certainly ask my association treasurer to take a look.

As we all know, the internet is an incredible source of information (and never should be confused with a credible source of information.) So, I suggest verifying this with your own professional tax advisor.

Just finished entering all data in TurboTax and it's telling me the IRS EV credit form won't be ready until 3/1. This is better than TaxAct, which just said "file manually." I'll have to wait another couple of weeks to efile with my $4502 credit.

The EVSE credit (Form 8911), unlike the EV credit on the car, is not available to those subject to AMT, right?

More and more, with the Orange Sun King and his merry men in charge, filing taxes for we non-rich people sounds like a "kids, don't try this at home" thing. YMMV.

My accountant just told me the same. The forms haven't been finalized yet.
Just like the gvmt, implement something before it's finalized. Lol

I used H&R Block Premium version, no problems filing online right at the beginning of February, got my refund (with the tax credit for my prime) last week.

I put in a 220V line and purchased my Duosida level II charger off eBay. Do I qualify for the charger credit too?

Did you have a professional do the electrical work and supply you with an official billing? What year?

What year question also with the EVSE?

You’re probably OK even as a DIY project. I had my EVSE installed in tax year 2015 and think the tax form basically asked for the “bottom line” for the installation. No receipts were filed to the IRS. I would just add up the cost of the wiring, junction box, etc. using figures from Home Depot / Lowe’s, and the EVSE. Being DIY, I doubt you should add an installation fee?

That's a little bit like a job candidate I once interviewed. He told me that he had received his MBA with high honors. When I asked him from what university, he replied that he was home-schooled by his mom.

Even so, while you can't get credit for your own labor installing your EVSE, you can claim the amount you spent on buying the EVSE on eBay and for any materials which you purchased for the installation. Just be prepared to present receipts and documentation if you are audited.

May the force be with you.

Does TurboTax allow you to print out your return? Wondering if they are just blocking electronic filing? Does the 8936 get sent to the IRS, or does a computed figure just gets entered into the 1040?

The printed fed return includes form 8936, which is emblazoned "DO NOT FILE" and "FORM NOT FINAL". I prefer efiling so I'll wait until TT allows it. I was able to efile my State return through Colorado's efile system so that $5000 credit is in the works
