That's my backyard. Part of my regular travels puts me within Hatfield meats smelling distance.

Ever consider making your own pork rinds.

I haven't had need to get that close to it in years now.

Yeah, once, but I didn't care for the taste much. Those sold in stores have added flavor that makes a bit more palatable. Still, I much prefer kettle-cooked potato chips with my cold beer.

Wonder if it smells anything like Dodge City, KS:eek:.

You can smell the cattle several miles away:oops:.

Once was enough for me and I had an uncle who owned a dairy farm (y).

I had to have a Chinese take-out fix last night, Since the two I frequent are closed 'til further notice, I checked Google Maps and found a place that just posted their menu. I gave them a buzz and they took my order, 1/2 hour, so they must be busy.
I drove over and got a parking spot right out front, which is near impossible in normal times on that street. I put on my N95 and walked over to the door, which was locked. There was a sign in the window which said "phone orders only, pick-up at rear door". I went down an alley and found the rear door, which too had a sign, "have phone number ready".
I gave the door a shave and a haircut knock and a head peeked out and just stared at me. I almost said "swordfish", but figuring she would have no clue as to what I was referring to, I told her I was there for a pick-up. "What phone number?" and when I gave it to her, she must've dug through about 8-10 bags until she found my order.
While I was waiting, another customer walked up right behind me. I guess he didn't know what 6 foot was, but at least he was wearing a mask, too. I gave him a you can't make this sheet up as I left and he laughed. Now, I have an idea if what dealing with a speakeasy was like.

I grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. They were competing with Omaha and Chicago for the largest stockyards in the world. Whew!! I didn't like it when the wind was from the south. But the soybean plants smelled even worse.

Then I spent a summer in college working at what was at the time the biggest meat processing plant in the world. We knocked 180 head an hour. Mostly, my job involved reaching up as a far as I could and blindly groping for the membrane that enclosed the esophagus and trachea so I could poke my finger through it and tear it down to the neck for the next guy to put a rubber band around the esophagus. All that while the dead beasties went by three per minute hanging upside down with blood dribbling down my side and into my rubber boot. Moral of the story was that they paid really well for that job but I smelled like lard all summer. Nastiest, stinkiest job I ever had.

order coming tomorrow night. i tried to put alcohol on it, but they wouldn't do it with contactless delivery.

so a friend turned me on to a company called drizly. they work with package stores and deliver in an hour for $5. plus tip.
a big warning comes up about delays with the virus, but they showed up in under two hours, order complete.

Sounds like there's more to fear than the virus. :(

Went to an ag school, so I can say it isn't a barnyard smell. Part of the preprocessing is burning off hair, and I'm guessing fat rendering later on down the line.

Went grocer shopping again Wednesday, been about 17~18 days. Again, went in at 7 am, "senior's hour", so was seeing the store on it's best behaviour. Observations:

    1. Not a big line up outside, maybe 1/2 dozen, by the time they opened the doors.
    2. Plenty of fruits and vegetable, nothing really in short supply.
    3. Meat pretty good, a few minor shortages.
    4. Bakery well stocked, lots of bread selection.
    5. Organic wheat flour (the only thing my wife wants): still GONE.
    6. Milk plentiful. Eggs, virtually GONE, and this is bright and early. Got a couple of dozen of the $8 a dozen designer eggs. There was maybe10 dozen left, of any description.
    7. Bins section all covered up, off-limits, but they did pre-bag and tag some of the common items. Raisins in particular, which I was looking for.
    8. Frozen blueberries: still AWOL. Oh well, frozen blackberries agin.
    7. Cheese plentiful, good selection.

What kinda ticks me: a lot of the fast-food places in our neighbourhood are doing thriving business. Some places you can see in, the employees are just milling around as usual, no "distancing" measures. People using these places are playing business as usual, hitting them up daily? This is a powder keg?

The fancy eggs are just under $5/doz here in the egg production capital of the eastern USA, and Mendel a) isn't here and b) has to pay in Looneys. I reckon that explains it.

designer eggs... Are they anything like "designer baby", just little more ethically acceptable? lol
